Morning church services are part of many families' Easter ritual. For some, that includes a sunrise service - bright and early.
Each year, several churches choose to hold their sunrise service on the shores of Wrightsville Beach. The natural setting with the sun rising symbolizes the rebirth that is celebrated at Easter. This year - the weather helped make the service extra special.
“It has always been some sort of beautiful morning,” says Marylee Hawse. She’s been to all twenty-five of the Church of the Servant’s sunrise services. “It’s my favorite service of all.”
“I thought this year went really well,” said Rev. Catherine Powell. “We had a nice crowd, there's a good feeling, so I thought it was a good one this year!”
The tradition of the sunrise service dates back to early Christianity with the Easter Vigil, which must be held between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday.
