more on the hewett story here...

BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- One day after Brunswick County sheriff Ron Hewett resigned about 18 people have expressed interest in his old job.

Brunswick County Democratic Party spokesman Robert Epstein told us an executive committee will hear from each interested candidate at 10:00 a.m. on May 10.

It's still unclear who will be on that committee but Epstein says the party is committed to having an open process, and plans on taking its time to make sure the process is done correctly.

Spam

Quit politicing and spamming the board...it all means nothing here, the public is not appointing a new sheriff, the democratic party is, send that to them....and same goes for that Prince guy too....

And exactly what does that

And exactly what does that qualify him for??? Anyone can sit in a classroom, but that doesn't mean they know how to do a job. If he wanted the job so bad why didn't he run for Sheriff during the last election. If I'm not mistaken, did anyone even run against Hewett last year? Since nobody ran against Hewett, I guess there were a lot of people that thought he was doing a good job

Obviously you don't know Benson

Who said Marc Benson even wants the job? You people got to understand that the sheriff is a political job. Benson doesn't come across as much of a politician to me. And by the way Wilmman I worked with Marc for 4 years and to me there wasn't a better LEO in the state and that's still true today.

BC would be better off giving him the job but I doubt he would take it. Too many crooked circumstances surrounding that office. He would be smart to stay out of it because it would be a mess.

"Benson doesn't come across

"Benson doesn't come across as much of a politician to me."

He may not, but he did run for Sheriff once..and got beat.

Sheriff

I think it would be in the best interest of the county and everyone involved if someone from the outside is elected the new Sheriff. The county does not need a new Sheriff that comes with a lot of baggage. The county does not need to hire someone that was involved in any way to this case. Also, relatives of a Sheriff and relatives of employees of the Sheriff's office should not be hired. That only causes more problems. TL Ocean Isle Beach

sheriff

well i know alot of people that use to work for sheriff's office and some that still does...telling you people right now better open your eyes and bring someone in there from outside noway from inside

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly AND I'm a Citizen Doing My Job

There a number of fine young officers at
the BCSD doing their job. They were not
part of the rotten apple surrounding Sheriff
Hewett. They take their jobs and families
very serious. There names have not shown
up in any of these reports because they
were the ones out serving and protecting
the public. You just keep a low profile
and do your job and avoid the best you
can the rotten CLICK.....God bless these young
men and women and now they will get a chance
to do a even better job.

Hewett and Complex Corruption

I sure hope the 18 candidates aren't from the BCSD. As for social services, someone needs to check on corruption in that department. How many fathers are made to pay child support for their children and can't get social services to put their name on the birth certificates of the minor children. They have all the proof they need to send the information to the register of deeds, but aren't following guidelines. As for the social services department, it needs to be investigated for the family members that get all the help and elderly families are having to do with out. How can a department continue to give benefits to a so called mother that abandoned not one but two children. Just because the second father is afraid, she will take the child away because his name isn't on the birth certificate. Justice is for the corrupt and not the honest citizens. Who goes to jail for not paying child support, definitely not the man that they won't take his name off the birth certificate. It is the father that paternity has been proven. So get a life.

Benson has no axe to grind in Brunswick County

I am with some of you considering Marc Benson to temporarily fill in the sheriff's position here in Brunswick County. While I'm sure there are many others within the department wanting to take the job, we don't know the full story on Hewett yet and the Federal, soon to be handed down, indictments. We may very well be in the same position we are in now if one of those others, Caison, Ingram, Cummings, Crocker, fill the position. I say let's wait until all this boils over and see who comes out clean.

These deputies that recorded phone conversations may have set up the sheriff. We obviously never heard EVERY conversation these men had with Hewett. Suppose Hewett behaved and said the things he did because his "friends" were worse. We have no idea because the phone calls released were one sided. And seriously why didn't they stop him much earlier? Something's not right in all this.

I think we get Benson in there temporarily, until there can be an election and not let God knows who decide on someone that may be knee deep in all this mess along with Hewett. He has proven himself to be a guy that isn't afraid to tell it like it is. I'd say more people like him than don't like him and he is certainly qualified to do the job.

I plan on being there May 10th and I just might stick my hand up to be heard about this. Who knows whose name might also come up. But no matter I am against the Gang of Four getting in until the investigation is over. Nothing against any of them individually, well three of the four, and if they turn out clean then I will work for them to be elected...off the clock!

I think we get Benson in

------
Are you talking about the same Benson that chickened out on speaking at a Board meeting in NHC because of a few extra deputies were there to support their own Sheriff???

Same Benson

That's the Benson. The only person that makes Causey lose sleep at night and become so paranoid he has to arrange to have some 100 fully armed deputies to fill the commissioners chambers beyond the fire mashalls approval rating just so Benson can't enter the chambers to call for Causey's head on a platter. The only person I know of that has stood toe to toe with the most corrupt sheriff anywhere in North Carolina. (including Brunswick County) And let's not forget how he stood up to Rex Gore and demanded the release of the wrongfully convicted Johnny Beck. Yeah that's the same Benson who for the past 4 years has made himself open to the public, the FBI National Academy graduate, the heroic firefighter that risked his life during the worst fire in recent history at Wrightsville Beach to climb into the burning structure to rescue a fallen fireman. That's him. The guy that blew the whistle on a corrupt sheriff Joe McQueen and won a lawsuit proving Benson to be truthful and removing McQueen from office in the deal. That's him, that's the Benson.

But I seriously doubt he is a chicken, you might want to ask him face to face if he is a chicken. He is at the radio station every Saturday at noon doing his radio show, go ask him, go ahead I dare ya. And if you can't find the radio station come by my house in Waterford, I'll be at the clubhouse while my kids are playing tennis at 1 on Saturday. Green Range Rover. Say what you want to me and I'll pass along the message.

He Can't Do That!

He can't do that Thunder; he has too many duties around the house to do yardwork and all now that he has lost his free clean up crew! I am sure he has a VERY long honey do list now! He better enjoy his freedom at his gateway village soon he will be behind his own set of bars!

So long Ron. We will miss

So long Ron. We will miss your ugly mug on the tv and Beacon. By the way, why don't you apply at the Beacon for a job until you are put away for a while?

You got it!

And take that fella whose letter appeared in the Beacon who kept hollering "I want my sheriff back!" with him.

Heck Yeah!

Heck Yeah; who wouldn't be interested in a $108K a year job here in Brunswick County????? That's more than a 2 person family a year! All the benefits he had too along with a Wal-Mart Credit Card and BB&T Credit Card along with the list of items that were turned in....WOW what did he EVER pay for; his mortgage or did us citizens pay that also on his BB&T card????? Our Good Ole' tax dollars paid for him and his family to live it up on the hog! I guess that carpet has been snatched out from under them.....What the life he had and HE screwed it up himself he has nobody to Thank but himself; I don't feel a damn bit sorry for him at all! His wife and kids yeah maybe a bit because of all the hell he put them through but he is a grown adult and knew what he was doing when he wasn't intoxicated!

Marc Benson

Marc Benson should be the only one considered. If he didn't apply, call him and appoint him. He will do Brunswick Co. more good than anyone else ever has or ever will. Congratulations Sheriff Benson.

Not Quite

Sorry, but I have a problem voting for someone that uses his radio talk show to talk negatively about the local Sheriff because he was out voted during the election. Obviously not as many people as he had hoped wanted him to be NHC's Sheriff. What makes you think people in BC would want him either. He couldn't hack it as a LEO so he turned to being a PI. What makes you think he can hack it now???

No thanks! We don't need

No thanks! We don't need New Hanover county's leftovers. I've heard Marc Benson singing the praises of Sheriff Hewett on his radio show only at the expense of bashing Sheriff Causey. Obviously, "Sheriff" Benson wasn't in the cards. Time to move on...

Sheriff Benson

I definitely agree that Marc Benson should be the next Sheriff in Brunswick Co. I lived in Bruns. Co. most of my life, now live in New Hanover Co. The citizens in New Hanover Co. didn't vote Marc in, which was a grave mistake, so now let Marc show Brunswick Co. what "sheriffing" is about. If any of the so-called "friends" "good ole' boys" of Hewett's become Sheriff, then I pity the citizens of Bruns. Co. The citizens there have been through enough with Hewett, let a professional like Marc make a change!!!

Isn't that the reason an

Isn't that the reason an investigation began in the first place? Let's be real. LOL

Welcome Sheriff Backstabber

OK so let's appoint one of those who turned in their best friend and ally to save their own neck. Ingram, Crocker, Caison, Cummings. Yeah that wouldn't be a mistake. One of them traitors would fit Brunswicked just fine.

I say bring in an outsider to run things temporarily and then let the public vote on a new sheriff in November. But this mess of the same old same old getting stuffed in and rewarding the backstabbers aint right.

RE: Welcom Sheriff Backstabber

First, Ingram had little to do with anyone at the sheriff's dept, he provided information that he had. Cummings is gone, but he did the right thing too. Caison and Crocker are still around and they did the right thing as well. It's terrible that you can't accept that people did the right thing. They did nothing wrong but try and help clean up our county's law. Ingram is a fair, stable, knowledgable, and respectable man. He is also a great LEADER. If you are going to call someone names or sling mud to those who are in the picture now - look at Smith - he is the one you don't want from the inside. He is no different than Ronald. A wolf in sheeps clothing.

Sure they did the right

Sure they did the right thing...I find if odd that these taped conversations only came after the Feds started their investigation. Why didn't Caison record conversations before the Feds arrived? Maybe he is trying to save his own butt. I really hope Hewett throws everyone under the rug

He should

Hewett is not the only dirty one. No one should be stupid enough to believe that. And they're not just in his department, either. I hope he does some healthy singing.

Turning On Each Other

Come On Gene Allen I thought you and Keith were

buddies

BUDDIES ???

CAISON,HOLDEN,SMITH. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. YOU MUST HAVE FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT SHALLOTTE 727.

I figured it out myself

You have a lot of nerve talking about how Masons are supposed to treat each other when you have a Mason behaving like Hewett has, Mr. Brunswick County Master Mason from Shallotte Chapter 727. Just shows you once again how far Hewett has fallen from what he was supposed to be - if he ever was. Masons don't cover up messes like this -if they're truly living up to their vows.

COVER UP????

WELL ARE YOU COVERING UP SOMETHING? SOUND'S LIKE TO ME THAT YOU BELONG TO SHALLOTTE 727 AND THAT MAYBE YOU TURNED ON RONALD.

Cover Up???

Not hardly, since I'm a female. What has that got to do with what I said. If you were anything, you would have explained it yourself but I figured it out. Sounds like a threat to someone to me.

I'll bite

Ok, I'll bite. To what are you referring?

Backstabbers?

Yeah backstabbers... that's what you should call the people who actually did some good and ended the corruption.

Backstabber

What do you call someone who breaks the law for 4 years and then turns on the person that gave them a job ?... the best job they ever had.

wow they impress the h@@@ out of me... when are you people going to realise.

when hitler was brought down did we let the generals go, when enron fell did we go after just the CEOs no, So why should we not prosecute these deputies who broke the law and spent tax payers dollars.....why didnt they just quite, Oh thats right they were to scared to do what they have done now, how is they all of a sudden found a pair,,,,

THE LAW

I AM A FORMER LEO AND WITH THAT BEING SAID I SAY THIS. IT IS OUR JOB TO UP HOLD THE LAW AND THAT INCULDES ORDERS FROM OUR SUPERVISORS. IF THEY ORDER A BAD ORDER THAT IS AGAINST THE LAW IT IS OUR JOB TO REPORT OR ARREST THE OFFICER. NOW WITH THAT BEINE SAID IN THE CASE THAT WE DO NOT REPORT IT OR TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE ORDER IT IS US WHO IS HELD RESPONSIBLE ASWELL AS THE ORDERING OFFICER.

MY VIEW IS THAT MANY DEPUTIES BROKE THE LAW AND THE CREED OF JUSTICE. FOR THE DEPUTIES THAT BROKE THE LAW ALONG WITH HEWETT I WOULD LIKE NO MORE THAN JUSTICE TO BE SERVED ON ALL.

I'm with you

That's what my family and I are waiting for.
