WILMINGTON -- A group of meteorologists at the National Weather Service say the threat of a tsunami hitting our area is real.
Although the chances are minimal, they want to make sure people are prepared.
A lecture at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher was part of a series geared towards naming New Hanover County a tsunami-ready county.
Meteorologist Tom Matheson explained how this are would respond to a natural disaster such as a tsunami.
Matheson said, "What we want to do is educate people that when a tsunami warning goes up, that they're not totally flat-footed -- it'll certainly be a surprise. It may not happen for 10,000 years but it could happen today and we don't know. So what I'm trying to do is lay the groundwork."
