WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New technology is all around us, and 2011 promises gadgets everyone will want to have. With those devices, many consumers may find they have a need for speed.
Verizon says it's bringing a large-scale 4G network called Long Term Evolution or LTE to the Cape Fear.
"We're very, very excited to be bringing it to the Wilmington market here in North Carolina and very excited for what it holds for our customer base here in Wilmington," said Kasi Greene, manager of the Verizon Wireless store on Oleander Drive.
Although the company is not sure when the 4G LTE service will begin, Greene said 4G customers can expect faster service when it arrives.
"What that's going to do is really speed up the 3G speeds that everyone has been receiving now," she said. "It's actually going to be about 10 times faster than the 3G speeds everyone is currently receiving."
Greene said to get the speed of the new network, though, you will need new wireless devices. That means all you 3G users are out of luck unless you're due for an upgrade.
Verizon is not the only provider with new features in the new year. US Cellular's Clint Mosely said you don't have to wait for a new network to launch to use the newest technology, because many different gadgets are already available. He said tablets, like the apple ipad or the samsung tablet, are extremely popular. Mosley said he does not expect tablets to replace devices already out there, but he thinks they are a nice compliment.
"It allows you to be productive on the go, keep you entertained while you're on the go and really just provide a better experience in addition to your cell phone and your laptop," he said.
Regardless of what provider you use, it looks like they are dialing up change in 2011.
Verizon says its new LTE network is a part of its aggressive network expansion. The company says service will include Wilmington and most surrounding areas.
