WILMINGTON -- Business owners in one Monkey Junction shopping center are criticizing the DOT. They say a new traffic pattern is frustrating their customers. Drivers now cannot make a left into the shopping center because of a new center median. The median is designed to allow for extra traffic flow that will be generated by the new Home Depot, opening soon. They either have to drive past the median and make a U-turn or cut through the Exxon station next door. Now business owners are taking action. J. Michael's Deli manager Heidi Lancaster said, "We don't know what to do other than... We have a petition drawn up to see what we can do about getting this changed to like it normally was." She also says customers are upset and often drive over the center median to get into the shopping center. The DOT says the median was extended to accommodate an additional left-turn lane on Piner Road.
