Moped driver gets into accident with four-year-old as passenger

A four-year-old is not supposed to be a passenger on the back of a moped. But that is what was happening today in Wilmington, when the moped was hit by a car. The driver of a Toyota Corolla hit the moped around 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, after making a left turn from Wrightsville Avenue onto Colonial Drive. Both the moped driver and the four-year-old boy were taken to New Hanover Regional. Their injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

i agree these moped

i agree these moped maruaders are everywhere in the middle lanes its like that jack nicholson movie easy rider wild and free ,just hang on ,they are getting away with murder by driving on the same state roads us insured drivers are paying such high costs to maintain , tax , title , tags , vehicle tax , inspection . the state just denied a bill #h238 i think is the number for scooter drivers to be liscended ,someone should send this article to the house of representatives and ask are you sure you want to deny the next reading of that bill .or julia boseman should bring up this accident on her next visit , scooters should be driven by liscensed drivers and only motorized bicycles should be driven by drunks and dopeheads

Hummm

The law says that a child under the age of 8 and under 80 pounds must be in an approved child seat....How do you put a child seat on a something with no seatbelts...

It also says EVERYONE must

It also says EVERYONE must wear a seatbelt, but obviously that's not the case on motorcycles and mopeds

Bicycles

I don't know if they are made for mopeds/scooters, but bicycles do have a special "baby seat" attachment, complete with waist and shoulder straps. Very nice design. A little difficult to master, but at slow speeds, a nice way to allow a small child (usually doesn't carry children over about 3 years old) to ride along with a Parent. And baby helmets are made, even for the youngest child. They really look like "helmets", as opposed to the smaller adult bicycle helmet. Andrew

Moped

These things should not be allowed on the road without a valid license period! 99% of the time they are driven by people that have lost their driving privileges because of drunk driving.

I dont agree with the 99%

I dont agree with the 99% drunks driving the mopeds.. Im 24 and a college student studying criminal justice, and Im thinkin of buying one because they are cheap and you dont have to have insurance. With this economy im in with mopeds.

WPD NOT doing their job when it comes to scooters

To qualify as a moped and/or as a scooter, your bike cannot exceed 30 miles per hour on a level service and it cannot possess an engine larger than 50 cubic centimeters. (50cc) If your moped/scooter exceeds these standards, you must register it as a motorcycle. Otherwise you do not have to register it, have it inspected, nor have it insured. This means, the majority of the scooters riding around Wilmington, NC ARE above 50cc, and would require it to be registered as a motorcycle, the driver would have to posess a valid NC drivers licence, and the 50cc or over scooter would need to have liability insurance. Many scooter owners will pop the cc tag off of the scooter however a quick lookup of the VIN would provide engine displacement size.

None of the LEOs are doing their job when it comes to scooters

I agree...they should not be on public roads. NC law states that when on a public road, they must be on the far right hand side of the far right hand lane (just like a bicycle) and are not permitted on roads with a speed limit higher than 35 mph. I know of 12 tickets that should have been written just yesterday to and from work. I have seen this idiot numerous times on Wrightsville Ave in the middle of the lane like he owns the road. The people on the "liquor-sickles" and drunk-bikes have no right on the public highway. They pay no outrageously priced insurance, pay no maxed out Federal Highway Use Tax, have no license (for a reason), pay no silly inspection fees, yet get to use a public thoroughfare and act like they own it....come on. Issue them tickets and start impounding these nuisances. Wave Transit cries everyday about not having any money. Make these morons ride the bus and stay off the streets!

First of all, LEO cannot

First of all, LEO cannot just pull over a moped and check to see if it's under 50cc or not. There has to be more to the stop than that. Also, nowhere does it say mopeds are not allowed on roads where the speed limit is above 35mph

The newspaper says he is 6.

The newspaper says he is 6. Not that it matters, still seems dangerous to me.

Ugh

I wonder if this is the same jack that use to ride their kid from Rocky Point to Wilmington. The kid actually stood in front of the "parent". I called Pender County Sheriff and they never caught them, since they would cross over to New Hanover County I would call them and they never caught them. DSS didn't catch them either. They were on the same schedule as me and I would passed them almost every day. It seems the LEO couldn't catch them, if they tried.

Moped Accident

Its a shame that people just dont know how to drive and would hit a moped its the loosers who whine about the kid being on the moped miss the point the point is people are to damn busy talking on cel phones doing makeup to be paying attention to whats going on around them nothng wrong with a 4 year old as a passenger on a moped go to any dirt bike track and you will see some amazing things 4 year olds can do driving bikes so as a passenger with a helmet shouldnt be a problem as long as the cars start paying attention to what there doing as a wise man once said dark up there aint it !

I hope this is an April

I hope this is an April Fools comment. Use some punctuation. You are the idiot!

Moped Accident

Have you lost your mind! What planet do you live on. A 4 year old should never be on a public road on a Moped.

Typical

An in typical New Hanover County Child Protective Services fashion, they will send this little boy home with the person who endangered his life by putting him on the back of a moped and wait for something else to happen to him. Anybody want to speculate if the driver will be charged?

What is the age limit for

What is the age limit for passengers on mopeds and motorcycles?

Charged? Why waste time and

Charged? Why waste time and money, just lock the driver up and throw away the key.

Charge

Depends on how fast they were going and if the law sets penalties. I wonder how the child who held in place. I used to have a bicycle with a baby seat on it and rode around with my son in it (who was around 3 at the time). It was about 10 years or so ago. It's not easy to have a second person on a two wheeled vehicle. So it's possible child services may get involved for, at least, endangerment. Andrew

Didn't I read a few weeks

Didn't I read a few weeks ago where the WPD is beefing up patrolling the streets of Wilmington in order to catch such dangerous acts as this one was? Traffic offenders apparently continue to slip through the cracks. I haven't read one news report as to how this new program the chief of police has implemented is doing......(?)
