NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (AP) - Dead pelicans continue to wash up along the southeastern North Carolina coast, and now some of them are turning up decapitated.
Toni O'Neil is the director of Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary in Hubert. She says more than 60 birds have been found since November that were deliberately injured or killed.
Sanctuary volunteer Deb Woody says at least four birds were decapitated, but she suspects the real number is higher.
The sanctuary is offering a $1,000 reward for information about the deaths, along with a $2,500 reward from animal rights group PETA.
Onlsow County Wildlife Officer Scott Strickland says it's against state and federal law to kill the birds.
