BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The man who hit and killed an Oak Island woman last month is now charged with second-degree murder. Highway patrol said Daniel Brennick was drunk and speeding on River Road in Brunswick County when he crossed the center line and hit Satu Harris's car head-on on May 7. The 38-year-old mother died at the scene.

Brennick had a prior record, including reckless driving and driving while consuming a controlled substance under the age of 21. He is still in the Brunswick County Detention Center under $100,000 secured bond.

Reading this after 4 months

I'm just starting to read all the comments and tributes that were written about my sister now, 4 months after she was killed. Until you lose someone you were so close with, so unexpectedly, you cannot imagine what it is like. I saw her "beyond mangled car" after this murder, I was told not to view her body--to remember her the way she was. I could not give her a proper goodbye. On the day she died I was moving into my new house. She texted me and said "first day of the rest of your life". I never had a chance to respond and this was the last day of her life.
My sister was not any typical single mom. She volunteered in the community, donated money, time and her photography to lots of local businesses. She went back to school later in life and graduated with so many honors. She raised 3 wonderful kids. She was working at a great company and getting her life in order and truly coming into her own. She was everyone's best friend and always helped people in need, even when she needed help herself.
This was a crime--pure and simple. I am confident there will be justice in this case.
This world lost such a special person and I'm not saying that cause I am her sister. If you see her youtube and facebook tributes you would know this as well.

My son is doing an

My son is doing an assignment about an individual who has died from an alcohol or drug related incident. The purpose of the assignment is to show the possible horrible outcome from alchohol/drug abuse. Could we have your permission to use your sister's story to spread awareness? We would need some additional information such as the date of birth and date of death. Also a brief overview of your sister's life.

Satu Harris

To all of you who think our jails are over crowded, this jack wad is a murder. He not only drank too much and drove BUT he did it again!!! Satu Harris was a benefit to this community and I hope he rots. He deserves to be in jail. He is the kind of person I want in jail, I don't want him loose where I live. So think about Satu Harris, young, happy, a mom and a beautiful human being, who chose to work some over-time that night. Just trying to support her family and this thing deciedes to get liquored up and kill her. Yeah, he deserves compassion. Why don't you tell her kids he shouldn't be in jail. Tell them, better yet tell them next year when it's the day before mother's day again. Save your compassion for those who deserve it.

WOW!

To all the people defending this guy......
Once is an accident! This piece of work is a habitual offender! His charge reflects it! He killed a friend of mine. It could have been one of your family members. His family can still visit him. Satu's family can NEVER visit her again. Look into his record and you will see he isn't the angel you think he is. He should pass go and head straight to the death chamber. Drinking is no excuse for anything. Anyone who defends this guy makes me sick. How can you make excuses for him? "He's not a bad guy" BULLS**T!! He made a choice to get pilled up, drunk, and get behind the wheel of a car. Thus turning the vehicle into a deadly weapon and taking a life. This was a concious choice just as picking up a firearm and shooting someone. The only difference here is the weapon of choice!
R.I.P Satu!!!

Where in the world did you

Where in the world did you get that he was pilled up, check your facts before you start saying stuff.

Drunk Driving

Im not sure I share the same vengence as most of you do. The accident was a tragedy for sure but in my opinion the our jails are filled with people who have broken the law but are not criminals. In my opinion a drunk is pathetic but not a criminal. Sending them to prison doesnt do a thing except cost us money. I can think of a dozen alternative ways of treating such behavior. Its like a woman who gets into an accident and her child gets killed. She faces a murder wrap if the child wasnt in a child seat. Is she really a murderer and criminal....not in my mind. Twenty years ago such an accident would have been a tragedy...today its murder only because they passed a law saying it is.
Over 80,000 people die every year in hospitals because someone screwed up. Thats 20 times the mortality rate of people killed by drunk drivers. How many Doctors and nurses do you see going to prison. Im not suggesting they do, but I do believe this society needs to find alternative methods of dealing with non criminal minds. If there is no intent to kill...to me its not a murder. Our prison space should be reserved for those that have no regard for life at all and intentionally take a life.

Where is accountability here?

I understand our prisions are crowed but people have to be made accountable for their actions. This guy had been accused of drunk driving in the past. He hhad already known the penalty. He was pushing fate. How many people does he have to kill before you consider it a criminal offense? You have to put yourself in the shoes of the family and friends of the breaved. Had this drunk driver been in your neighborhood that day and struck a friend or family member of yours you too would want justice. I think you over smiplify the situation. Doctors an nurses are covered by malpractice insurance their intent is good when they are trying to help someone. Someone who is driving drunk is only self absored moron. There is no helpful intent there. The law looks at intent. The drunk driver know full well the dangers of drinking an driving. He is an alcoholic he has an illness and no slef control. Much like a pedophile who can not control thensleves and a danger to the public an there is no way for him to help himself so he must be imprisoned to pay for his crimes againt this community.! There is not real arguement for anything other than murder.Anyone who thinks otherwise there are alanon meetings for you to attend to help you stop enabling your alcoholic.

DRUNK DRIVING

VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT. I AGREE 100%. THERE ARE SO MANY BAD LAWS ON THE BOOKS THAT ARE TURNING ORDINARY PEOPLE INTO CRIMINALS. ARE YOU AWARE THAT THE LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE NOW HAS MORE PEOPLE IN PRISON THAN THE OLD USSR? THAT FACT CAN EASILY BE RESEARCHED. THE THINKING OF MANY AMERICAN'S IS FRIGHTENING.

Really?

Not a criminal for killing someone while intentionally breaking the law? Well Big Dog, I'm sure once you've had someone that you adore, maybe your mother, sister, daughter, or even BEST FRIEND killed by a drunk driver your opinion would change.

He needs to have the ADA

He needs to have the ADA that was going to try the Fire Chief of Oak Island..... Yes i agree with people on here, he made a mistake, and whether people know it or not he is suffering alot for his actions. So everyone who gets on here and make comments must be perfect and don't do any wrong or don't break laws.

Mistake?

He didn't make a mistake A mistake is adding 1 + 1 and getting 3. He committed a criminal act. He drank and then got behind the wheel and he killed somebody.

I am sure he regrets what he has done but now he has to pay for his criminal actions. A family has lost a loved one, that can never be replaced.

Time to put on the "big boy pants" and take responsibility.

I think this is BS how

I think this is BS how everybody gets on here acting like they know the guy in the crash. yeah he may have killed someone by ACCIDENT, but that does not give you the right to get on here and talk crap about him and his family.

I don't know the fellow, but...

this was NOT merely an accident. This was the direct result of HIS DECISION to drink then get behind the wheel.

Best Friend

She was everything to me. I am a changed person for having had the opportunity to know and love this incredible woman. She will forever be my spiritual sister and my love for her shall never die. I am completely empty without her, but I find strength to fill me, even if only one drop at a time. It is her that gives me that strength! I miss you baby:(!

Drunk driver !

So, he was charged with second degree murder, he is in jail because he couldn't post bond.
what now? In Brunswick county when he gets a court date they will say time served and let him out to kill again!
I know a man who went in and out of brunswick county court rooms for years for drunk driving, never had to serve a day for it. They always let him walk away!!
So what? last year he crossed the center line and killed a young mother of three. He did bond out on his second degree murder arrest.
A year later where is he? Still wandering around Brunswick county living his life. No court date yet. Why does it take over a year to put someone on the stand and either determine guilty or not?
The woman is in the grave Yard! the children with no Mom. The highway patrol say they are strick in arresting drunk drivers in NC but the courts set them back behind the steering wheel until they kill.
Don't get to excited about the man in the above story sitting in jail until his trial date, doesn't mean he'll go to prison.
If you could ask MY daughter she'd be able to tell you that much!

FAIRNESS ?????????

I JUST DONT GET IT !!!!! MY NEPHEW WAS KILLED THE SAME EXACT WAY, BY A DRUNK DRIVER WHO HAD PRIOR CONVICTIONS, AND THE MAN THAT KILLED HIM GOT OFF WITH 3 MONTHS IN THE DART PROGRAM, A PROGRAM FOR ALCOHOLICS. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SINCE, WHY WASN'T HE CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER, WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM? WHY ISN'T ALL CONVICTIONS TREATED THE SAME? WHY DIDN'T THIS MAN GET CHARGED WITH MURDER? DO YALL REALLY THINK IT'S FAIR TO FAMILIES? OR IS IT ALL IN WHO YOU KNOW? ACCORDING TO THE DA'S OFFICE, THE CHARGES BOUGHT AGAINST THIS PERSON IS ALL THAT COULD BE DONE. WELL I SEE DIFFERENT NOW. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH BRUNSWICK COUNTY????

You need to get the story

You need to get the story right if you are going to report it. Brennick is not in the Brunswick Detention Center. Try the Prison Hospital in Raleigh where he is still recovering from serious injuries from the accident. Oh yea thats right, who cares about the other family also going through pain and suffering for the rest of their lives? Not WWAY TV3, because all this is to them is another storie they can't even get right!!!!

His injuries

His injuries are a direct consequence of his decision to drink and drive. I feel sorry for his family for having to bear the burden of his family, but I reserve the majority of my sympathy for the family of the woman he killed.

This piece of garbage

This piece of garbage deserves no sympathy, neither does his family for letting such a piece of trash loose onto society. Drunk Drivers should get LIFE in prison. Not enough room in the jail cell? Put a bullet in their brain.

Why do small time drug offenders spend years in jail, and DUI/DWI's get let off time and time again?

SO YOU HAVE NEVER DRIVEN

SO YOU HAVE NEVER DRIVEN AFTER DRINKING
COME ON GET REAL;YOU JUST DONT THINK IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU
I'LL BE OK
JUST TAKES A SPLIT SECOND AND YOU SEE WHAT CAN HAPPEN

Thats your defense?

Everyone is doing it so that is your excuse? Your pathetic. An just an just so you know I am 36 yrs old and have NEVER EVER EVER BEEN been drinking and driving. I have always been a responsible person for my actions. I feel its my civic duty not to drink and drive. I also feel its a moral one, for I could not live with myself if I killed a person. That man if he had one ounce of moral fiber would throw himself on the mercy of the court and just pead guilty. He is not responsible citizen!

I know the man who was

I know the man who was driving drunk.
its no excuse.. but i feel bad for his mother because i know her as well.

Its sad and tragic what happend to the woman he hit.
but its also a tragedy when a 22 year old man could spend the rest of his life behind bars and miss the opprotunity of being a husband, father and son/brother to his family.
HE MADE A HORRIBLE DECISION TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR.
and because of his decision(while impared) someones life ended
but let god do the judging.
no one has the right to say daniel deserves to have a bullet in his brain.

Satu

Your thinking is misdirected. His story is sad yes but one he wrote. Satu did not get to finish her chapter. She will not see her daughter or son marry or be a grandmother or retire and enjoy the fruits of her labor.

ACTUALLY THIS GUY IS NOT A

ACTUALLY THIS GUY IS NOT A PIECE OF GARBAGE, HE IS A GOOD GUY THAT MESSED UP, HE DID NOT MEAN TO DO IT, AND HE PROBABLY FEELS REALLY BAD ABOUT WHAT HE DID. AND THE PERSON THAT SAID SOMETHING ABOUT PUTTING A BULLET IN THEIR BRAIN, HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU LIKE THAT.

Save the taxpayers some

Save the taxpayers some money and do away with the idiot now!!!!!!!!!

wow- really? peope make

wow- really? peope make mistakes... he is actually a very brilliant person- yes I will be the first to say that this was not a good decision, but his punshment was fair and it is time for him to be able to move on with his life.

Why should a murderer be

Why should a murderer be able to 'get on with his life'???? This isn't a mistake, its reckless homicide. He should rot in jail for his actions.

Tragedy

My prayers and support go to the victims family. My family member killed another innocent person because of his terrible decision to drink and drive. He is now serving time in prison and is sharing his story to prevent these tragedies from occurring. Search for the Matt Maher Story or go to www.themattmaherstory.com to be encouraged
