WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Replacing the gym floor at Myrtle Grove Middle School will cost New Hanover County Schools more than expected. That's because the existing floor contains mercury, which means extra work, which will happen this summer.
The district was already going to replace the 22-year-old floor. State and county health officials do not believe there is a health risk. The gym will continue to be used for the rest of the school year.

Mercury in Gym Floor
It is very unlikely that the mercury detected poses a threat of any significant kind. We tend to panic over these reports, while forgetting that all the new "green" energy light bulbs contain mercury which could pose a threat if broken in our homes.
