N Topsail homeowners settle on condemned homes

Owners of some condemned homes in North Topsail Beach finally have the pay day they have been fighting for. After three years of legal battles, about a dozen home owners will share nearly $1.6 million dollars. The town will pay about $800,000. The town's insurance company will pick up the rest. The homes were condemned in 2005 after the town deemed them unlivable. North Topsail resident Jim Silverthorne said, "My heart goes out to those people out there and I'm very sorry, and I hope some compensation can help them get relocated or whatever." Town officials would not return phone calls about the settlement. We did reach Board of Alderman ember Robert Swantek who would only say "it's a done deal."

Settlement at N topsail beach

I feel sorry for those folks up there I once lived in N. Topsail But they were told not to build up there that Mother Nature was to Iffy with the tides and the chanel.

Why is this the Town's

Why is this the Town's fault?

Let me understand

I want to make sure I understand this. The people built on the beach, an area known to shift and move but yet it is the taxpayers responsibility to pay for their loss??? These folks should be forced to make claims on their homeowners insurance and leave the taxpayers out of it. Just wait, in the news next week will be a story of North Topsail raising taxes due to a "shortfall" in the budget. Maybe North Topsail will learn from this and only allow future beach development after the property owner signs a contract promising not to expect the city to pay for their foolish building location.
