NC AG: MySpace finds 29,000 sex offenders on its Web site

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- MySpace.com has found four times as many registered sex offenders on its social networking site than it cited two months ago.

That's according to North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, who says more than 29,000 offenders were found on the network.

Cooper is one of several attorneys general who recently demanded MySpace provide data on how many registered sex offenders were using the site, along with information about where they live.

MySpace initially withheld the information, citing federal privacy laws. MySpace began sharing the information in May after the states filed formal legal requests for the data.

Two MySpace spokeswomen didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

Cooper is pushing for legislation that would require children to receive parental permission before creating social networking profiles, among other changes.
