NC county tells some teachers they're losing jobs

READ MORE:
ASHEVILLE -- A North Carolina county is one of the latest to tell teachers that their contracts won't be renewed for the coming school year because of looming budget cuts. The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Tuesday that about 80 Buncombe County teachers received the letters Monday. Buncombe County is losing about 110 classroom positions. Attrition and retirement is covering the balance. Spokeswoman Jan Blunt said the district has about 1,900 full-time teachers. Cuts are coming as legislators try to cover a budget gap. teachers

The last thing the governor should be doing is cutting teacher's jobs. Already NC is one of the lowest states in teacher salaries and now we are reducing them even more. The state of NC's education is going to be pitiful if we continue on this course.

Teacher Cuts

I have been a first-year teacher in Duplin County schools this year, and I was given a letter Thursday stating that my contract would not be renewed due to budget cuts. As a first-year teacher, it's discouraging. It's all I've wanted to do my whole life, and now I'm being cut. I thought North Carolina had a teacher shortage. It's sad that students and teachers are going to suffer while Bev Purdue enjoys relaxing in her newly-renovated governor's mansion. The fact is, it's called the Education Lottery. If only half of that money has to go to education, then it should be called "the Education and Whatever else we feel like spending money on Lottery."

Teachers losing their jobs

What is happening to our country and who can put it back on course? It is a sad day when sports "stars" are paid millions to "play" and the States and/or Counties are willing to short-change their students by not paying adequate wages to the teachers and now, not paying them at all. This nation of ours is in it's sickest state ever! Our priorities are so upside down, it is pathetic. What a shame and an emabarrassment our nation has become. Sherry Richardson Wilmington, NC

Teachers losing their jobs,

Teachers losing their jobs, and Bald Head Island is expecting NC to give them 5 million tax dollars to dredge............

Thank a Democrat

Thank a democrat and the NCAE for contributing to them. I guess the lawmakers want teachers to train our future leaders and to bail the state out of their idiotic finances at the same time with pay cuts. Well let's start with a recall of Bev and work our way down the democratic party ladder. Teachers have to follow the No Child Left Behind laws, but they certainly should Leave All Democrat Legislators behind.

Don't blame democrats...this is all on republicans

Republicans are to blame for the abysmal state of the economy and the economy is to blame for teachers being layed off. Obama simply inherited the mess that the Republicans created in their eight year reign of terror. Also, North Carolina doesn't allow recall elections so there goes that plan. V/r Joshua Walker

You are too funny

Obama... OBAMA!!! He has NOTHING to do with this. ::Walks away from idiot JW:: Obama. Democrats and Republicans both contributed to this mess. Deregulation of the banking industry by the Democrats so that anyone can buy a house, a car, a... you name it has contributed a good amount to this. The UAW havent help by causing labor rates to go so high on manufacturing a car that we pay for every bolt tightener and radio knob placement operator to be paid $80.00 and hour. I agree that in ONE POINT IN TIME, unions were helpful, but now they are obsolete. Republicans haven't helped the economy either by other standards. Most of all WE created this mess by over borrowing, over spending, and over extending ourselves. Once and for all we as a nation need to hold ourselves accountable and be less greedy. I see the shallow end of the gene pool is procreating quite quickly JW. I will hold on to my life preserver and let the shallow end fester and eventually die out.

Brilliant

I'll say one thing, you must really be a brilliant person.

Hey Einstein!

This is about STATE finances. Who ran the governor's mansion and state legislature?

Ridiculous

This is totally ridiculous! Our kids are going to have to suffer because of Raleigh's poor planning! This should have never happened. They really let us down.

Teachers losing jobs

This comes after several counties and schools have had to make cuts to certain parts of the schools activities including sports etc. I guess I am wondering with all these cuts and now Teachers are being cut as well. Just where in the heck has all the dollars gone from the...what is it called again??? NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION LOTTERY????????

Shame on you Bev!!!

I voted for Bev Purdue in hopes that her teaching background would give her the good sense to realize how important teachers are to our future. Well now I see that a politician is a politician. When people fought the lottery from coming to NC I wondered why. It should be illegal to circumvent funds from the "NC Education Lottery" to fill the pockets of Raleigh's fat cats. They said they wouldn't touch this money, but the now they are talking about a 10% cut across the board for state employees. Bev is in essence a state employee, let's start from the top. How can you boast in a T.V. commercial how much the lottery has "raised" and be laying off teachers at the same time. So typical! Try finding teachers now!

A good question to ask Gov.

A good question to ask Gov. Perdue. It certainly is not going to education!
