ASHEVILLE -- A North Carolina county is one of the latest to tell teachers that their contracts won't be renewed for the coming school year because of looming budget cuts.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Tuesday that about 80 Buncombe County teachers received the letters Monday.
Buncombe County is losing about 110 classroom positions. Attrition and retirement is covering the balance.
Spokeswoman Jan Blunt said the district has about 1,900 full-time teachers.
Cuts are coming as legislators try to cover a budget gap.
