NC judge orders dogs from fighting ring destroyed

READ MORE:
WILKESBORO, N.C. -- A North Carolina judge has ordered that more than 125 pit bulls be destroyed even though animal advocacy groups offered to have the dogs evaluated before determining their fate. The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Superior Court Judge Ed Wilson Jr. ordered Monday that the animals seized from a dogfighting ring be destroyed. County officials said Wilson didn't have a choice because of state and county laws regarding the definition of dangerous dogs. The 127 pit bulls, including about 60 puppies, were seized Dec. 10 during a raid. Best Friends Animal Society had offered to pay to have the dogs evaluated and to spay or neuter the adoptable ones. Three people have pleaded guilty in the case. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Unfortunately...

I'm a huge dog lover and Pit Bull advocate. I've fostered a number of dogs, many of them Pit Bulls, but I'm understanding what this judge has done. I don't think that the puppies should be euthanized, but there are so many dogs that are in shelters right now that have no history of aggression or fighting that we don't need to add more. Shelters, rescues and foster homes are packed with dogs that have been abandoned or given up due to the economy. My point is, there are so many great dogs that are already looking for good homes that we don't need to add to the overpopulation with dogs that have a history of fighting.

These pits like the chimp

These pits like the chimp can turn on owners unpredictably. I assume that you all think that is was wrong for them to shoot the chimp? The violence is bred into these dogs period.

Really scary when there are

Really scary when there are nuts like this running around playing judge. This guy has simply lost it. Most of these dogs, and especially the puppies, could make great companions if given a chance.

Pitts

Personally I think thats Pitts should be rehabilitated if at all possible, but also make it illegal to breed them. Just let the breed die out. It's also been proven they are incredible easy to train to fight

Pits put down

This is a real shame. I think it is awful that the courts did not give at least the puppies a chance to be taken in by Best Friends. Very sad...

It has been proven time and

It has been proven time and again that the dogs used in fighting rings can be rehabilitated and adopted. The County simply does not want to spend the money to handle it. How can you possibly deem the sixty puppies to be vicious? It gets to the point where the people who are so called "saving the animals" turn out to be worse than the criminals who had them in the first place.
