RALEIGH, N.C. -- The North Carolina Correction Department is looking for more than 140 probation officers, but a requirement for two years' experience means the jobs are hard to fill.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday the jobs require the experience in social work, the military or law enforcement. Officials acknowledge the openings have been posted only on Web sites for state and Correction Department jobs.
The system has been under scrutiny for two years, since two men on probation were charged with killing a graduate student at Duke University and the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The chairwoman of the criminal justice program at the UNC Charlotte says the experience requirements mean students who just graduated won't be eligible.

I have a degree from UNCW. I
I have a degree from UNCW. I majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Sociology. I have worked for the Department of Corrections for 3 years. I have applied numerous times and I still have yet to get an interview. My experience with the DOC has been the corrections side and case management and still no interview! I have never been in trouble and have always received Very Good or Outstanding TAPS, still no interview. I am beginning to think; they don't really want someone that wants to work there. They need to hire based on qualifications and stop hiring based on "who you know." They would get better quality people that want to be there.
Good luck.
And if management continues to treat their officers/employees like they do in New Hanover and Pender counties, good luck. They manage by intimidation , constant threats of disclipinary action and threats of dismissal. Their philosphy is "500 people out there want your job" -so either work or "go somewhere else". Even as bad as the economy is, who wants to work in a thankless, stressful job for low pay and constant threats by management or the fear of termination if you "screw up". Its not the job or the offenders!!!!
