READ MORE:
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- A North Carolina man has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for the shooting death of his father and opening fire at his former high school. Alvaro Castillo entered the plea Wednesday morning in Hillsborough after Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour ruled Castillo was competent to stand trial for the August 2006 shootings. The 21-year-old Castillo is charged with shooting and killing his 65-year-old father and then driving to Orange County High School, where he fired at the school with a rifle and a shotgun. Castillo entered not guilty by reason of insanity pleas to all of the charges, which include first-degree murder. He has been in Central Prison in Raleigh since the shootings.
