NC SBI agrees to $4 million settlement with Gell

READ MORE:
RALEIGH -- The State Bureau of Investigation has agreed to give almost $4 million to a former North Carolina death row inmate who sued after he spent nine years behind bars before being acquitted at a new trial. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that documents made public Thursday show the SBI agreed to the settlement with 35-year-old Alan Gell, who was sentenced in the 1995 killing of Allen Ray Jenkins of Aulander. The settlement was made on behalf of SBI special agent Dwight Ransome, who was the lead investigator in the case. SBI Director Robin Pendergraft says Ransome now works in an administrative job and won't conduct other investigations. Ransome declined to be interviewed. Gell is serving a five-year prison sentence for indecent liberties for having sex with a 15-year-old girl after he was freed. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

What if.

What could have NC done with this money, they are giving away. How many books could this money had bought for our kid?

Sounds like Ransome was a

Sounds like Ransome was a dirty SBI agent. He hid witness statements from the prosecutor from 15 to 20 people who stated they saw the victim alive after Gell was incarcerated on other charges. Kind of hard to kill someone out there when you're locked up in jail. Ransome relied the statements of 2 teenaged drug addicts whose stories changed constantly to implicate Gell. They were involved in the murder and were trying to put the blame on someone else. Now, Gell is no model citizen. He's in jail now for indecent liberties. But, he didn't kill this guy, and was put on death row for murder by an SBI agent who knew Gell couldn't have done it, and withheld evidence that would have proven it. Sounds like Ransome is the one who should be in jail. Instead, he still works for the SBI drawing a salary of over 72,000 a year.

a mel gibson outlook of conspiracy

it was probably a conspiracy between Ransome and the SBI agent ...what is 10 years of your life for 4 million split? After all he is what 34 years old.My guess, he was set up on the child molestation or sex thing by others that decided they did not want to split the money. Stranger things have happened. I can tell you this...sometimes people may or may not know stuff and sometimes citizens would like to do the right thing but sadly the it has become the citizens (who come forward)burden to bear the evidence. It's really frustrating to know that so many in law enforcement or a position of being able to help is on the bad side ...They are the ones treated as if they have something to prove. I don't know what is worse...having information about something and not coming forward...or having information and no one caring or believes you. Guess either way the end result is the same.
