NC school heads volunteer to help kids, schools

READ MORE:
RALEIGH -- Rival North Carolina education leaders whose roles were laid out by a judge this summer are appearing at different education events. State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison reads to a group of students in Raleigh on Thursday at the kickoff of a literacy campaign. Harrison plans to volunteer at one learning assistance center every month this school year. State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson planned to speak with volunteers and teachers attending a school supply giveaway in Durham. Atkinson last month won a lawsuit that ruled her elected position should run the day-to-day education affairs. Harrison resigned from his newly created position of schools CEO but kept his additional role as school board chairman. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
