NC sheriff's deputy shoots pit bull during attack

JACKSONVILLE -- An Onslow County sheriff's deputy is on bed rest after an attack in his yard where he shot and killed a pit bull. Sheriff Ed Brown says Lt. Dwane Wade was headed to his patrol vehicle Monday morning when he heard his dog barking. Two pit bulls attacked him when he investigated. Brown says when Wade was able to reach his weapon, he shot one of the dogs to death. The other pit bull ran after the shot was fired. Brown says the remaining pit bull attacked other deputies on the scene, but was quickly captured and taken to a nearby animal shelter. Those deputies suffered no injuries. Brown says the special investigations division is investigating the shooting. Brown says Wade was treated at an area hospital, and is on leave until he recovers. Wait, whose dogs did he shoot? It says that the sheriff shot one of "his" dogs...This story is confusing, but on a side note, pit bull attacks are way too high. In my opinion, they are a terrible breed of dog and are way to violent to own without special permits.

Re-read the article. It clearly states he shot one of "the" dogs which were threatening his dog. Nothing confusing about that. You might want to revisit grammar. "way to violent" should be "way too violent"

You have a reading comprehension problem. The story, no where, says that he shot one of his dogs. It says..."attack in his yard where he shot and killed a pit bull." The story also says.."he heard his dog barking." Lets sum up. He heard his dog barking came out and saw two pit bulls that attacked him. He shot one of the pit bulls and the other ran off to later be captured. No word on the condition of the deputy's dog.

It's not the breed. It's the owners.

Pit Bulls have an unfounded bad reputation. Statistically speaking, you are more likey to be bitten by a Chow or a Doberman. It's unfortunate that you only hear about the Pit Bull incidents. The problem is that knuckleheads (ie...Michael Vick) abuse them and make them aggressive intentionally to serve their purposes. You said that 'Pit Bull attacks are way too high'. It's closer to the truth to say that the number of thugs allowed to own a Pit Bull are way too high. ANY DOG can be trained to bite people. Respectfully may I ask that you do not stereotype the breed. I have 2 Pit Bulls that are adoring of people,especially children. I like your idea of a permit to own a Pit Bull.I would tweak it to say that those convicted of any felonies and certain misdemeanors would have to have a permit. All others, no permit. Like owning a gun. On a brighter note, I am glad the deputies are ok.

Please read it again, he did not shoot his dog. And you can not say that ALL pit bulls are a terrible breed! My brother has one and she is the most loving dog you would ever know (and she was abuse by her past owner)! It is NOT the breed, but the owners that make them bad.

Most dog bites are from cocker spaniels every year, not pits. And it is never the breed, only the owner. Plus, read the story fully before commenting. It said he was alerted to two stray dogs in his yard by his dog barking. One of the strays bit him, not his dog.
