NC sheriff's federal sentence cut by judge

LUMBERTON, N.C. -- The federal prison sentence has been reduced for a North Carolina sheriff who admitted lying about corruption in his department. The Robesonian of Lumberton reported that a judge reduced the 72-month sentence of Robeson County Sheriff Glenn Maynor to 24 months. U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle cut the sentence Tuesday at a hearing in U.S. District Court in Raleigh. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., ruled in February that the judge made a mistake when he sentenced Maynor to six years in prison last year. The court said Boyle made a significant error by not adequately explaining the sentence. Federal sentencing guidelines for Maynor's offense call for imprisonment of 18 months to two years.
