NC sheriff renews immigration deportation program

READ MORE:
CHARLOTTE -- A North Carolina sheriff says he'll continue to use a controversial program that allows deputies to report suspected illegal immigrants after they're arrested on other charges. The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that Mecklenburg County Sheriff Chip Bailey signed a new agreement with a federal program that allows deputies to put immigrants into deportation proceedings. Mecklenburg deputies have placed more than 7,700 illegal immigrants into removal proceedings since the department joined the program in 2006. Bailey expects fewer immigrants will be deported because the Department of Homeland Security wants the focus on serious offenders. The federal program has been criticized for being used to round up minor offenders instead of serious criminals. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

WY WAIT????

AS SOON AS YOU SEE SOME ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE NOT FROM THIS COUNTRY YOU SHOULD ASK TO SEE THEIR PAPERS. IF ANY OF US WERE TO DO SOMETHING THE WAS AGAINST THE LAW. THE STATE WOULD PUT US BEHIND BARS. WELL COMEING OVER HERE WITH OUT PAPERS IS AGAINST OUR LAWS. SO WHAT IS THE DEAL?

Wy indeed?

I am a naturalized US citizen who came here legally, followed the process to the letter and then became a US citizen. I do not 'look like I am from this country.' However, even though English is not my first language, I do know how to spell 'why' and 'coming' and 'without'. According to you, I need to carry my US passport with me everywhere I go just because I don't look 'American'. Do you want to be treated that way when you visit Cancun? I am just as American as you are, and I appear to be more literate in your native language than you are. What have you done to deserve American citizenship? You just happened to be born here, while I had to take a test and an oath. As a result of that, I probably know more about US government and US history than you do. So the DEAL is that profiling is illegal. Just because some people are here illegally doesn't give you or anyone else the right to stop and question anyone who doesn't look like a 'regular' American, whatever that is. Learn from history: Japanese-Americans were very poorly treated during and following World War II. Most Americans learned something from that sad time. Maybe you slept through that lesson. PS: your Caps Lock button appears to be stuck.

You'd feel differently if it was you or your relatives!

I am a legal American citizen, If I commit a crime they would demand I prove my identity just like anyone else. I am white. I would still expect to be ID'd. Why should we not ID someone else just because they are of a different ethnicity than white? Isnt that "profiling"? Here is an example of what we will hear in the near future. ("Officer Smith could not get a positive identification on our suspect because he couldnt legally ask for Identification due to the suspect being of a minority descent, therefore to avoid being sued we just let the suspect go on his word.) Sounds kind of ridiculous to me. We need more proactive law enforcement officers that do their job without being accused of being a racist. People of all colors/shapes/sizes/sexes commit crimes. Just because someone has to prove their citizenship does not mean they are being profiled. ESPECIALLY if they are committing crimes! If that same law enforcement person let an illegal criminal immigrant go, and that same illegal went on to kill, murder, rape etc. you or one of your relatives, you would be demanding justice! HOW COULD YOU LET HIM GO? HE WAS HERE ILLEGALLY AND YOU DID NOT EVEN VERIFY HIS RESIDENCY??? You would be asking for that officers punishment/resignation.

Profiling

Your argument is ridiculous. You need to understand what you are talking about before you can present a rational argument. I recommend you google 'profiling' and understand what it means, then see if your argument makes any sense.

ID

I believe you misunderstand the concept of profiling. Anyone who has been caught committing a crime should be required to prove their identity. If that person is here illegally then deportation should occur. No one should be required to prove their identity just because they appear to be from a different country. Profiling means detaining someone for no other reason than their physical characteristics. I do not believe that can ever be justified. Anyone caught committing a crime needs to be arrested, regardless of nationality or race. Every criminal suspect, regardless of physical appearance, should be required to prove their right to be in this country. Anyone who cannot should be deported.

Kudos!

Excellent response. Sad to say that many, if not most, naturalized citizens know more about our country than those who were born here -- including the language.

Please tell me: What does a

Please tell me: What does a person from this country look like?

I'm pretty sure he means

I'm pretty sure he means someone like me, an average white person. My family came here illegally, sometime in the 1700's - I know they didn't have the premission of the native Americans. But I doubt they look like regular Americans to this person either. He probably thinks they should be shipped off somewhere too...Oh wait, they've already been put on reservations by regular Americans a long time ago. We're all immigrants or decendant of immigrants here. While I certain don't advocate illegal immigration, it's pure idiocy to suggest profiling people because the way they look. It would be like the USSR - "V'ere are you're paperz?" Not exactly what we think of as a free country.

Illegals

Way to go ! Round them ALL up and ship them back. Since Dell is closing a plant in Winston Salem and moving to Mexico and some "off shore places" let them go there and work instead of taking away our country's jobs.

WOW

an elected official that is ACTUALLY DOING HIS JOB...I'm floored!

If they are here illegally,

If they are here illegally, they ARE criminals whether they have committed any other crimes or not. All illegals should be deported.

You are just too ignorant.

You are just too ignorant. YOU should be deported.

Illegals

So, how do you propose to tell the difference between an illegal alien and a naturalized US citizen? Are you saying it's OK to demand proof of citizenship from anyone who appears to be from another country? Is this the kind of country you really want to live in???
