Need for financial aid on the rise

Applications for financial aid have spiked 30 percent since last year in North Carolina, as more students seek help amid the economic recession. North Carolina is expected to offer about $300 million in need-based aid this year. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, deadline is March, and a college foundation spokesperson says the earlier applicants turn in the paper work, the better their chances for receiving aid.
