New coastal evacuation plan in the works

READ MORE: New coastal evacuation plan in the works
If a hurricane hit our coast would you know where to go? A new coastal evacuation plan is currently in the works. The new evacuation plan would let people know exactly where to go when evacuation orders are given, in the event of a category 4 or 5 storm. Right now New Hanover County residents have five shelters they can go to in case of a category one, two or three storm: Dorothy B. Johnson Elementary School, Noble Middle School, Eaton Elementary School, Trask Middle School and Codington Elementary School. If a cat four or five storm hits the new plan would take effect. Currently in its early stages the draft version of the plan lists Johnston and Harnett Counties as the primary host counties in case of an evacuation. The new evacuation plan will be the first ever statewide effort to coordinate shelters and evacuation routes in advance. The full draft version of the coastal region evacuation and shelter plan is due by the end of this month. The final version is expected in August.
