Public pool operators are scrambling to comply with a new federal pool safety law taking effect this week. It requires all public pool and spa operators to replace outdated drain covers with new anti-entrapment drains to better protect swimmers. The YMCA in Wilmington was busy changing drains Friday. Officials said complying with the new law is the only way to ensure their swimmers safe. "Divers are putting in the new covers right now, that is all to prevent entrapment, that might be hair or clothing or a bathing suit that might get stuck to the drain that may be stuck to the drain because of the flow of water going in and out of that drain," said YMCA CEO, Dick Jones. Pool operators found without the new drain covers, could be shut down and subject to heavy fines.
