Brunswick County Animal Services has a new gas chamber used to euthanize their animals, but the new installation has animal rights activists up in arms. The county says it’s the safest way to put down wild animals that could harm their shelter workers, but the Humane Society says the chamber is pure torture. Eastern North Carolina Humane Society President Peter MacQueen says the new gas chambers at the Brunswick County Animal Shelter are an out of date method of putting animals down, a method he feels is an embarrassment to the county. "Our feeling is that the animals deserve to die in dignity, and in the most humane and kind way possible,” he said. MacQueen says a gas chamber causes the animals to suffer a long and painful death and he believes the best method is quick lethal injection. County officials disagree. They say gas euthanization is the only sensible way of safely handling feral or wild animals that can pose a danger to the shelter workers. "Sixty percent of the animals we take in are ferals, and wild and have never been in a house, and you try to handle them, they get terrorized,” said Don Yousey of the Brunswick County Health Department. The new chamber just arrived, and animal shelter staff say all they have to do is roll the crate into the chamber, and a safe amount of carbon monoxide is released inside. “With any poisonous gas there is a risk, but we have it outdoors. We keep it ventilated, we do everything we can to keep our workers safe,” Yousey said. The machine is equipped with a sensor that controls the amount of poison that is released in a certain amount of time. MacQueen says he's heard this all before. He remembers an incident in Lincoln County when a chamber blew up after it was taken over by gas. "There’s no telling how many workers have been made sick or died as a result, or long-term exposure to carbon monoxide cause it causes heart disease, it causes cancer." Health Department Director Don Yousey says the machine is inspected by the state and OSHA. An industrial hygienist was scheduled to inspect the machine today, to determine whether it is safe and operating properly.

Okay then:

If your so against them using something to help keep workers safe from WILD animals, as in... ones that could have rabies or just be generally insane, then you hold it down, i have a brick.

You want dignity, its better than having your head blown off because you injured several workers trying to give you a "dignified" death.

Anyone who argues is just a moron, and i'd love to see them deal with a wild animal.

WELL WHY DONT YOU ASK YOUR

WELL WHY DONT YOU ASK YOUR COUNTY AND SHELTER WORKERS HOW THEY FEEL ?THIS IS A INHUMANE WAY OF KILLING AN ANIMAL EVERYONE REGARDLESS THEY BE 2 OR 4 LEGGED SHOULD DIE WITH A LITTLE BIT OF DIGNITY .YOU TAKE THAT AWAY YOU HAVE NOT EVEN TRIED A LETHAL SYSTEM DONT PUT IT OFF ON THE WORKERS BECAUSE I BET YOU THEY WILL NOT BACK YOUR STATEMENTS UP.

Well well well..................

If each one of you concerned citizens would march right on down there to adopt one or two of these animals it would solve a lot of the problem. Or How about donating a spay or neuter job or two. No takers I bet. I have adopted from this shelter, more than once. All of the animals I have adopted have been spayed. This would be a non issue if people would take care of the pets they have. These animals are not being carted in from surrounding counties which goes to show that the residents share a part of the blame in this situation. And what better way to make themselves feel better and less responsible than shoveling the blame on Animal Control. All of you folks with designer poochies need to adopt a mutt. They make wonderful loyal pets. Instead of being a part of the problem try becoming a part of the solution.

Although I agree with what

Although I agree with what you say, a majority of the people you are talking to, are responsible pet owners. The ones you need to talk to are the ones who would never take the time to read this article or anything on this subject. It's a shame that murders on death row get more rights than a pet that has done nothing. I personaly have, and have had, many rescuses. They make wonderful pets!

I dont really understand

I dont really understand this story? Why not just beat them to death with a shovel? They are just dogs, whats so cruel about hitting it over the head a few times with a blunt instrument. Its certainly most cost effective.

you and me

A shovel in each of our hands....I bet I will be the last one standing....you are a shame to the human race.

You're joking-Right?

If you don't understand: perhaps you have been hit over the head a few times with a blunt instrument or that same shovel. Why not go into our prisons, nursing homes and hospitals and put these people out of their misery with the same shovel? But, maybe then you maybe in one of those prisons have you had the other end of the shovel to help you loosen your bowels?

So just maybe the

So just maybe the authorities should check into whether you have any animals or children around your home. After all, people abuse animals and then children are the next step. Maybe your wife or girlfriend should take a good look at her situation as well.

What' the best way to put a dog down??????

When you have a pit bull biting the toes off a child this is the perfect way. He did not bite them softly. These dogs need to go just like they attack quickly. They bring suffering to the homes of the children they bite. I have seen them in action and it is no joke. From a parents point of view i think they all need to go in there. If this was a chamber for killers you would not have said anything.Love the dog before humam i guess. Some of them dogs are out of control. You try to walk up to one. They risk being bit.

Idiot

Do your research before you open your unintelligence mouth! During recent studies done on thousands of breeds the pit bull out performed as a good family pet, the golden retreiver, the lab and many others.
Punish the deed not the breed.. There are the scum bag red necks and ghetto dwellers that get their hands on these magnificent dogs and because the pit bull is soooo eager to please is easily trained to fight.. Reason...do I have to tell you.. I feel I do... To please their dispicable owners...
You know, people like you shouldn't even be able to breed because of your ignorance alone!! LMAO IN RHODE ISLAND

I'm still not so sure the

I'm still not so sure the dog was guilty in this case. The dog would have taken the foot not nibbled the toes, besides this is not about the breed. It's being humane....

The pit bull was a puppy and

The pit bull was a puppy and was wagging it's tail so hard at the reporter that it's entire body was wagging. This was not a "pit bull attack" and the crack head parents weren't taking care of the baby so they probably were not feeding the puppy either. And since it was euthanized here in Jacksonville, it was most likely by lethal injection. If you are for or against the gas chamber, that is your business. Get your facts straight though before trying to make this about a particular dog breed.

ignorance is stupidities closest relative

are you kidding me? FIRST of all, this story isnt asking anything about breeds. 2nd, the story youre referring to about the dog chewing a kids feet off was a 9 wk old puppy, teething and doing what dogs at that age do naturally. I own a pit bull, and know at least 10 others that do and they arent the least bit aggressive. You have fallen into the media hype that only tells the breed of a dog biting if it is sensational and makes the emotional people buy papers. Give it a rest. If you look at the dogs that bite the most according to humane society statistics, pit bulls, dobermans, rotweillers etc arent even in the top 20. Its cockers, dalmatians, chows, poodles, pomeranians, chihuahuas and every other little dog with inferiority complex or serious inbreeding. We offer lethal injection to our countries murderers, molesters etc..its the least we could do to an innocent dog thats merely a by product of the environment humans raised it in..

Dog breed?

This story is not about dog breeds.

Inhumane

I think lethal injections are a better than gas when putting an animal down. Having said that, using gas to euthanize animals is by far more humane then the way abortion clinics go about terminating the life of an unborn child. Where is the outcry on behalf of the unborn babies. Some of you have a problem with the euthanization of unwanted animals but do you have a problem with the killing of unwanted babies. I'm sure there will be some post defending abortion. Just remember you are able to respond to this post because you weren't aborted.

gas chamber

I can't believe Brunswick Co. has bought a new gas chamber for animal euthanasia! This is like a step back into the primitive Dark Ages. It is NOT humane. It causes agony & suffering. The chamber is for the humans' convenience. Why not use money for supplies for lethal injection which is much more humane? Better yet why not use the money to prevent the necessity of euthanasia i.e. more spay/neuter programs & food for these animals while they are kept in a HUMANE Shelter?

gas chamber

Why even take the dogs to your shelter to kill? Why not take them to Paws Place (no kill shelter) or another no kill shelter.Instead of money towards killing these animals use it to feed and care for until adoption like no kill shelters do, maybe you will sleep better at night.

In a perfect world...

No-Kill shelters often have to turn away homeless animals because they don't have room. They keep the animals there until adopted. This process can sometimes take years. When a no-kill shelter has 50 dog pens yet there are 4000+ homeless dogs per year in Brunswick County for example, how many dogs do you think they'll have room to take in?

With gas the animals become

With gas the animals become unconscious in mere seconds. If the animal has compromised veins from age or is not accustomed to being handled by people then gas is a more humane end than an injection. Animal control staff should be allowed to choose which method is best for the individual animal.

It can take up to 45 minutes

It can take up to 45 minutes for an animal to loose consciousness in the gas chamber.

Have you ever seen an animal

Have you ever seen an animal gassed to death? Your response is idiotic, it is not "mere seconds." No where near it. I'm sure you can find some video somewhere showing the torture that actually happens. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Outrageous

There must be a way where one could maintain staff safety while minimizing trauma and/or pain to the animal being euthanized. It's done in many, many animal shelters throughout our nation. Why can't Brunswick County catch up?

My stepfather is a

My stepfather is a veternarian, so I've witnessed animals (including my own) being put to sleep by injection, and it is a very kind and painless procedure. Provided, of course, that the individal administering the injection is gentle and the animal is kept calm. The animals that I have seen being put to sleep by lethal injection had no idea it was coming and went peacefully and quietly. Not only is the gas chamber an inhumane method of putting animals to sleep, I am certain that any animal put into the chamber knows that something very bad is going to happen.

Veterinarian

The animals that are PTS in the vet's office are people's pets. That is not always the case at animal control. Many of these animals are there because they are aggressive, are stray, or are feral. Not all want to be closely handled by humans the way your pets do.

gas chamber

all the money Pender Co. makes each year w/the courts system, seems like they could afford animal shots, this Hitler approach to killing animals is cruel.

This is NOT a step foward, it isn't right !!!

A gas chamber is NOT a humane way for anyone to die. This isn't a good thing , it isn't a step forward toward humane treatement of animals. They suffer in the gas chamber and no animal should suffer. It is our job to be their voices and their voices are screaming NO! Don't do this! A gas chamber is bad. I think you should refer to this book "Miracle Dog: How Quentin Survived the Gas Chamber to Speak for Animals on Death Row " If this book doesn't change your mind maybe nothing will :( Read this :http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/04/0411_050411_peteuthanasia.html And if you have more doubt contact Randy Grim ( http://www.strayrescue.org/)and he will tell you all about his fight and how more shelters in the US are looking at alternative options. If the US can do the right thing we should to. Please please please DO NOT do this to animals , it is cruel and inhumane!!! Sincerely Helene Bolduc

Gas Chamber

Gas Chambers aren't new they are old news. Lethal injection is new and now considered the most humane way to PTS any animal even wild and feral ones. Come out of the dark ages and care about the animals.

It may be the safest way....

...but it is certainly not the most humane way. Anyone who had been present when an animal is gassed knows that they just don't lie down and go to sleep. They do not "go gently into that dark night." The sounds are horrible. So it's not humane at all, and this is absolutely, 100% for the safety of the shelter workers. Don't even try to pretend that it's humane. A bullet to their head would be far quicker, more humane, cheaper, and the PR image wouldn't be much worse. Of course, the counties spend millions every year on feeding and housing human beings, who are supposed to have a larger brain and should be able to manage their lives in some rudimentary fashion. Why can't we kick a few of their lazy, incompetent butts off TANF and Medicaid, kick them out of public housing, and use the money we save to simply feed and house these poor animals? These dogs and cats are likely in the situation they're in because of humans, anyway. We could build canine and feline equvalents of Creekwood and Houston Moore and simply house and feed the dogs and cats that no one wants.... ...PLUS, we could spay and neuter them so that they don't breed irresponsibly, and we KNOW that they won't be robbing nearby businesses or dealing drugs!

NOT HUMANE

More humane....NO WAY!! It is a horrible way for any creature to die. My shelter gets in strays all the time and would never even consider doing this. Wild animals can be sedated from a safe distance and humainly euthanized with letal injection, which costs mere pennies to do. Stop this NOW!!

Gas Chamber

It is a shame for the cost of the chamber I am sure lethal injection supplies could be purchased which is a faster more humane way to PTS. There are safe means to deal with a wild or feral animals. They normally arrive in a trap and if need to be PTS it can be done right in the trap. It is a step in the wrong direction.
