New Hanover Commission approves budget, tax hikes

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County residents will soon be paying more taxes. In a 3-2 vote, Commissioners approved their annual budget this morning that included a 1.3-cent property tax increase. The property tax increase will roughly produce $4.4 million in additional revenue to help the county combat its $11 to $14 million deficit.

Commissioners also formally approved a quarter-cent sales tax increase okayed by voters last month. That increase goes into effect July 1.

CASTER AND MORE TAXES

THERE GOES BILL CASTER AGAIN
WHEN YOU HAVE A DISGRACEFUL RECORD AND A RECORD OF LIES LIKE CASTER -YOU RESORT TO SLEAZE AND TRY TO SMEAR YOUR OPPONENT.WE HAVE SEEN THIS FROM THE FOLKS RUNNING CASTER'S CAMPAIGN BEFORE SO WE SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED. AS HIS FELLOW COMMISSIONERS HAVE STATED PUBLICALLY CASTER HAS BEEN DECEITFUL WITH HIS POSITIONS ON TAXES AND SPENDING.
WE CAN HOPE THAT VOTERS WILL SEE THROUGH THE CASTER DUPLICITY--EITHER TODAY OR IN NOVEMBER. THE CASTER RECORD AND CAMPAIGN SLEAZE IS ONE VOTERS WHO KNOW THE FACTS WILL REJECT.

Caster leads to higher taxes and the state of politics here

YOU ARE SO RIGHT- CASTER HAS RUN DISGUSTING CAMPAIGN AND WITH HIS POOR RECORD IT WILL SHAME US ALL IF WE LET HIM AND HIS CRONIES BUY A RUN OFF WITH VULGER SMEARS AND DISTORTIONS. SHAME ON CASTER FOR THIS KIND OF CAMPAIGN-SHAME ON REPUBLICANS IF WE LET HIM GET AWAY WITH IT. HIS SPENDING VOTES CAUSED HIGHER SALES AND PROPERTY TAXES TO PAY FOR THEM.

voting for berger-he's for holding line on taxes

I agree with comments below-Berger will hold the line if he keeps promise for zero based budgeting-Caster has lied to us to many times on taxes and spending-he needs to go

I hope that elected

I hope that elected officials see that as taxes increase, so do gun purchases. Do they think this is by chance.

If they were to be trusted, then they wouldn't have made it sound like if the sales tax were voted on (and I don't know who did, perhaps the 52% came from everyone who works in the local government), they would not have to raise property tax. Now they do both!

At what point are the people of New Hanover County going to say "ENOUGH"? Are you, the citizens, scared to ruin the live you are so confortable with? The harder I work, and I work very hard, the more they take. And I am getting tired of it. Cut me some slack or cut me loose!!!

Government employees

Hey dimwit. I happen to work for the local government on a blue collar level job, and let me assure you the 52% you say "must have been local government", wasn't us.
For your information, we have been denied merit increases and cost of living raises since 2007, so why would we come to work, when the price of getting here, and food going up, just to service dimwits like you, vote to raise taxes so that we could have more money coming out of our pockets. You must think we're working in D.C..
Next time, before you make such an outlandish statement, go out & take a poll to get your facts first.
You must be a transplanted Yankee.

Wow, they don't just stick

Wow, they don't just stick their hands in one of your pockets they are sticking their hands into all our your pockets! (And probably trying to get a feel while they they are at it)

Property tax increase

We would not have had a property tax increase if it were not for bill casters spending habits and failure to control waste at ABC and the utility. Berger is for limited government and a fresh look at budget-which we sorely need if we want to hold the line against further tax increases.

I continue to be amazed

at the budget process.

Regardless of county involved, each County budget factors in certain funds which they anticipate the State will provide.

As our State faced nearly a One Billion Dollar deficit, which the Legislature is currently struggling to cover as they try to hammer a budget together which the Governor will sign, I wonder how realistic any County Budget put forth now will be.

Today is June 22. The new state budget is to be in place by July 1. In theory, if the budget has not been approved and signed, not only will no state money be forthcoming to each county after June 30; but, the State Government could be forced to cease operations.

That latter option might not be so bad. Perhaps it would force legislators and bureaucrats to think like business people and realize you can not spend more than you take in.

Currently, the state still has approximately 300,000 unprocessed tax returns with approximately $200,000,000 in anticipated tax refunds.

That $200,000,000 has to come from some place. And I remain amazed that they plan to implement a new budget with this significant 2009 liability hanging over the State Treasury's head.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

If they think this year's budget process was tough; wait until next year when the Feds will not have stimulus money to dispense. Wait until all of the Medicaid funding cuts hit that will result from Obamacare. And those are just 2 of many issues which could cause a financial tsunami to hit our state within 12 months.

But, do not be surprised, within the next week, if every county is back at the drawing board, fine tuning their budget, when the reality of state funding hits.

Caster's tax hike and spending

our master of deceit bill caster has struck again-he voted for all the spending but then left others out to hang by this vote on taxes. What about all the othet Caster tax increases-Caster;s actions are those of a tax and spend liberal-
I'm going with Berger who has been for zero based budgeting- lets reject caster tax and spending- plus his waste and corruption at ABC.Please caster no more deceptive ads or Sleazy innuendo backed up with no facts. Whose trying to steal run off with big spending from those who do business with the county. That is fact not caster lies.

SALES TAX + PROPERTY TAX=CASTER THE WASTEFUL

Caster voted for all the spending in the new budget--his record is one of waste and mismanagement. Today-other Commissioners voted honestly-except for caster who before election bails on tax vote to support his spending. That's why others dont like to work with him.
LET'S NOT BE FOOLED BY CASTER-IT'S HIS ACTIONS AFTER ELECTIONS-AND NOT His WORDS BEFORE THAT SHOULD SCARE THE HECK OuT OF US--FALSE ADS DON'T CHANGE THE FACTS AND HIS RECORD.
