New Hanover County approves budget

READ MORE:
NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- New Hanover County commissioners have approved the budget for the upcoming year. Next year home owners will have to pay 42 cents per $100 of their property value. That 42 cent tax rate is two cents above the revenue neutral rate. County commissioners originally proposed a property tax rate of 42.75 cents, but will use almost $5 million from savings to keep the rate at 42. To break it down for you, a homeowner whose house is valued at $200,000 will have to pay $840 in property taxes next year. Cameron Art Museum will also get $50,000 a year for the next three years to maintain the museum. Mebane Boyd said, "The county funds our public schools and the Cameron Art Museum is about education and art education so it was very fitting that they support this museum and this campaign." Also in the budget, almost $85 million for the New Hanover County school system and 20 additional county jobs instead of the proposed 64. This budget is only for the county. The City of Wilmington is expected to vote on its finalized budget at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
