WILMINGTON -- The race for the White House promises to be a close one. And the race to beat the registration deadline was tight right here in New Hanover County on Friday. Friday was the last day to register to vote. For many people Friday turned out to be a race against the clock. According to preliminary numbers from the New Hanover County Board of Elections this is the busiest registration season ever. More than twice as many people registered to vote in New Hanover County this year as did during the last presidential election back in 2004. Since the first of the year more than 4,000 new voters have registered in New Hanover County alone. New Hanover County Board of Elections Director Bonnie Williams said, "This is the first time I've ever seen an election quite like this one. This is just phenomenal and wonderful, it's almost it's like an election fever out among the county across the state and the nation." If you didn't get a chance to register you can still vote in this election through the one-stop voting process. The New Hanover County Board of Elections will be hosting an open house Monday at 3:00 p.m. at the government center. Topics will include a review for election night processes and answer questions for voters. The public is encouraged to attend.
