New Hanover County voters had the opportunity to register and vote all on the same day, but the cutoff to do so was three days ago. Bonnie Williams is the director of New Hanover County's Board of Elections. She says at least 41 people used the new system this time around and it didn't seem to cause any voter confusion today. The Board of Elections got the word out about same day registration through legal notices in the paper, and the county's website and cable channel. Williams says the hope for this new method is to increase voter participation. Williams said, "Same-day registration could have and effect on how people register to vote and where they could register to vote, when they register to vote and how soon they can vote after they register." Proof of residence is required for one-stop voting and same-day registration.
