New Hanover Schools cuts ribbon on Snipes Academy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Lights, camera, action. New Hanover County Schools opened the Snipes Academy of Arts and Design today.

Students showed off some of the performance skills they'll use in the classroom. The environmentally-friendly school is a new facility that will integrate the arts into the regular curriculum.

"What we do is integrate arts, music, dance and drama into our core subject learning to enhance our program and to give our students opportunities they normally would not have in a school that wasn't a magnet program," principal Laura Jennings said.

The school is named after Annie Herring Snipes. She was the school's first principal when it opened in 1943.

to the students on their new school. I am sure they are incredibly happy to have a clean, new environment to attend. But this saddens me also because I have learned that my grandson's school, Bellamy, is so crowded that they have a class that has to meet in the library. This does not allow the other students access to the library. My grandson has the same library book he has had all year. Now, I understand that class of students will be moving to the cafeteria. They will be trying to have class where the other students are having lunch. I am sure you remember how loud that atmosphere is. Somehow this seems so terribly unfair to all these students. Someone has to do something. NOW!
