WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A corporal with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has been demoted following a criminal complaint. Charles Smith, the former public information officer, is now working in the Detention Division.

The Sheriff couldn't tell us the nature of the investigation, but said he asked the SBI to look in to the complaint. Then, state investigators found no criminal charges. A subsequent internal investigation resulted in Deputy Smith's demotion. Deputy Smith is in the process of resigning to pursue a career outside of law enforcement.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO BASH A COP

ANOTHER CHANCE TO BASH A COP - I have known and worked with Charles Smith and it is unfortunate that, because he is in law enforcement, one, he instantly becomes news and two, the public jumps to the position that he is guilty of an allegation or that there is a cover-up and then he is dragged through the mud of public opinion because he is a police officer. Long hours, pour pay and unrealistic expectations often go with the job and I know that Deputy Smith has done much to move the NHCSO forward, that he has given endless hours, constantly on call and represented the department well. I hope the position didn't overwhelm him and consume him - often, people of his ability are abused by unattainable expectations of their management, especially in the law enforcement community. Its also disgusting and amateurish how the Sheriff has handled this, airing his dirty laundry in the public - very rookie and opportunistic for a politician like the Sheriff! Good luck, Charles!

BASH A COP

LOOK THE SHERRIFF HERE MCMANN OR HOWEVER YOU SPELL IT IS CORRUPT HE IS MAKING UP HIS OWN RULES IN REGUARD TO GUN OWNERSHIP AMONG OTHER THINGS... HE NEEDS TO BE INVESTAGATED AND THROWN OUT PERIOD HE HAS VIOLATED QUITE A FEW LAWS IN REGUARD TO GUN OWNERSHIP DENYING PEOPLE WHO WERE ARRESTED FOR MIST. NOT FOR A FELONY AS PERSCRIBED BY LAW HE HAS ALSO DENYED POEPLE FROM A CARRY EVEN AFTER COMPLETEING THE CONCILED COURSE AND THEY ALREADY OWN A GUN HE IS WAY TO BIAS AND NOT DOING HIS JOB AS THE LAW REQUIRES ....

Everything the Sheriff spoke

Everything the Sheriff spoke about is public record. Sorry if Smith is a friend of yours, but that doesn't mean the Sheriff should not make publice what should be

Most of you seem to be

Most of you seem to be missing a major point here. While he was found to not be at fault on the criminal complaint, none of you know what happened during the IA investigation. Maybe he lied to them or didn't tell the complete truth. Right now, you guys are just speculating on what happened and don't have a clue

VOTE

Charles Smith for Sheriff 2010!

Look Out Deputies

From what I have observed, anyone who wears a badge at the NHC Sheriff's office should be dusting off their resumes. Since McMahon has been Sheriff, there has been a noticeable decline in the Deputies having the support of the Office. I have yet to see McMahon back one of his Deputies on any incident. Someone who is charged criminally should not be wearing a badge, you can't enforce laws you can't uphold yourself, but Ed's actions go beyond this. He needs to realize that a big part of his job is to be a leader to his staff and to be there to support them. It doesn't happen very often.

Look Out BAD Deputies

What has been in noticeable decline are blanket excuses for individuals that have a badge. I am one New Hanover County resident that has taken notice that Ed McMahon seems to understand that his department serves the law-abiding citizens of this county, and answers to the law-abiding citizens of this county. It is a very refreshing change to how that office has been run in the past. And I believe that he is being a leader and a very good one at that! I would bet you that many deputies in that department are please with the integrity that Sherriff McMahon is restoring to that department. And the ones that are not, are probable the cowboys that has put the black eye there in the first place. The Sheriff"s office is not the place to give support for the sake of giving support, it's not a self-esteem class

Sheriff

I didn't read anywhere it says he was cleared of any wrong doing, just that they found no "criminal" charges.

Been Like That....

I am retired from law enforcement now, but worked at New Hanover County under Joe McQueen, and every Sheriff and interim Sheriff since, and the jail has ALWAYS been used as internal punishment. It should not be that way, but it is.

Been like that and time for a change....

I can totally relate to the "internal punishment." A lot is hidden and when one deputy makes a mistake, that person is used as an example. It's sad that the public that supports the Sheriff, really does not know all the other hidden things that do not get investigated. But every chance that comes along to ruin a good officer that is just a human being that may have made a mistake, they take a shot at them bury them in that mistake.

READ, people READ....

..what was written in the article. It, says "the state found no CRIMINAL charges". The sheriffs office has codes of morality and ethics to work by as well. Evidently the IA investigation discovered something in violation, it just wasn't criminal. Deputy Smith must be in disagreement and therefore needs a lifestyle change. He has that right.

somethings not right

If he was cleared then why was he demoted and put working in the jail. I understand that you work at the Sheriff's will, but come on he was cleared!!

it is all about your rep

it is all about your rep once something has been said about you it sticks with you even if you are cleared when something so big comes along that they pass it from ia to sbi then that is all people will see when they look at him not that he was cleared not all the work that he has done or time he has put in but the one thing that he may or may not have done

How are you demoted, found

How are you demoted, found of no wrong doing, and then you resign, sounds like he should have been put back in his corporal position if there was really no wrong doing?

Can we say

it's an election year and the Sheriff has to show who is in charge?

The current Sheriff has

The current Sheriff has worked for this department for a long time and was employed long before he became the sheriff. Unless I am mistaken, he started at the bottom and worked his way up. If you don't like him, don't vote for him, but don't assume he is only in it for the election. As I have seen others post on here, just because the deputy was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing does not mean that he did not violate department policy. I have relatives in law enforcement and I have always erred on the side of the officers, but not when they break the rules. I don't know the particulars of this case. I don't know if the deputy broke and rules, but if Sheriff McMahon holds his officers to a high standard then he should be applauded because those who are sworn to uphold the law should be held to a higher standard.

The SBI clears him, your own

The SBI clears him, your own IA division clears him and you STILL demote the man? Classy Sheriff, real classy. Can't imagine why he's seeking a career outside of law enforcement after that, go figure. And no, I don't know this gentleman, never met him, I just think that's crappy to do someone like that.

Locked Up either way

It is obvious that this Dept uses the jail to not only punish law breakers, but to punish employees. I understand firing someone for Law Breaking, exe: DWI, Domestic Violence..but just because an employee is accused...doesnt make them guilty....But from what I have seen...this agency uses the Jail as their "Siberian Gulag". Just ask some of the previous Road deputies who are now "assigned" to the jail. Ed...if this is your work...its not good. If you have given someone a free hand and your not paying attention...your staff may cost you the election...

Reference Deputy-not-so- innocent

Let me start by saying that it is obvious that it's a complete cover up!!! If you look at the Deputy's track record you will see that he doesn't stay with one department too long. If it looks like a apple and smells like a apple, it must be a apple. In my opinion he didn't get what he deserved, just ask around to other Deputies that know him and you will find that he is far from a Saint. Why don't we read between the lines boys and girls!!!
