New way to patrol

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- They ride in cars and on horses, and now, you'll see ten New Hanover County Sheriff's Deputies on bicycles. Sheriff Ed McMahon added bicycles to the patrol division to use in schools, parks, neighborhoods and at community functions. The bikes will also be used as a stealth tool. The gears don't click, so deputies will be able to move quietly through neighborhoods that may be experiencing break-ins.

“It makes us more approachable to the citizens. If we're in a car, they probably would feel a little more intimidated to come up to the car and talk to us, but on a bicycle, they would probably feel a little more at ease,” said Sergeant Dominic Segers.

The bikes are environmentally friendly, and deputies will get great exercise while they patrol.
