It's not illegal, but many say flying a flag above the American flag is disrespectful. Neighboring business owners say a used car dealership on Market Street has been flying its flag above our nation's for months, and they want it to stop.

The national 9/11 flag was severely damaged in the collapse of the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Due to the efforts of Joan and Dick Stewart of St. James who lost their son on 9/11, the flag is making its only stop in North Carolina in Southport this holiday.

According to the Leland town ordinance, a flag pole can't be more than 40 feet high, but the one at the Buy and Go gas station is 60 feet high, and even with the additional height council members are worried, when flown at half staff, this flag won't fly properly.

To many the American flag is a symbol of freedom, but in Leland, that does not apply to having a huge American flag. A gas station is flying the stars and stripes not in compliance to town codes.
