Topsail Reef is at the mercy of Mother Nature. The eight buildings, housing 240 homes needed protection from some major erosion, caused by a combination of Hurricane Irene, winter storms and high tides. The condo complex elected to have sandbags installed as a temporary fix.

Hurricane Irene's had a big impact up the coast from here, but the Coast Guard says our area's beaches were relatively unscathed. Boaters and fishermen from Pleasure Island say the Carolina Beach Inlet has become even more of a problem after Irene.

The Coastal Resources Commission held the final public hearing on the issue last night in Sunset Beach. Today the group plans to make its final recommendations and present them to the legislature April 1.
