State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force as part of the Holiday "Booze It & Lose It" campaign. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted beginning today through Wednesday, Jan. 2, across North Carolina in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

State and local law enforcement officers cited 758 motorists for driving while impaired during the "Booze It & Lose It' Halloween campaign, which ran Oct. 28-31. Brunswick County led the way in our five-county area with 38 DWI arrests. New Hanover was second regionally with 18.

Some Halloween partiers got a spook when they got caught in a DWI checkpoint last night at 15th and Market Streets in Wilmington. The sting resulted in more than 60 charges, according to Barb Lynch with the group Justice in Motion.
