NRC schedules public meeting to discuss performance of Brunswick Nuclear

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, June 21, to discuss the agency's assessment of safety performance during 2011 at the Brunswick nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Progress Energy, is located near Southport.

Nuclear safety officials have concluded that a fluke mishap last year at Progress Energy's Brunswick nuclear plant near Wilmington was caused by the lack of worker qualification for more than a decade.

NRC will keep closer eye on Brunswick nuclear plant

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has determined that fuel oil tank rooms serving the Brunswick nuclear plant’s emergency diesel generators were not properly protected from possible flooding, a finding of “low to moderate safety significance” that will result in increased NRC inspection and oversight of the facility.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will launch a special inspection at Progress Energy’s Brunswick nuclear power plant to assess the circumstances surrounding an event on Wednesday that required operators to shut down the Unit 2 reactor.

Brunswick Nuclear Plant reports "Unusual Event"

The Brunswick Nuclear Plant declared an "Unusual Event" early this morning as a result of a reactor coolant system leak, according to a Progress Energy spokesman. It happened around 3:01 a.m. The event ended around 8:15 a.m.
