Driver killed when Amtrak train hits van

State transportation officials say a woman was killed when her van was hit by an Amtrak passenger train in Mebane. Multiple media outlets report a spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Transportation said the Piedmont passenger train was traveling west when it hit the van at a railroad crossing around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

NC health officials: Two adults died from flu

State health officials say two adults have died from the flu in North Carolina, raising the state death toll during the flu season to four. The state Department of Health and Human Services reports the latest deaths involved one adult between the ages of 25 and 49, and another adult aged 65 and older.

Ocean Isle Beach golf course worker killed

A maintenance worker at an Ocean Isle Beach golf course has died after the equipment he was driving went into some water on the course. Multiple media outlets reported that 46-year-old Jose Morales of Calabash died when the maintenance equipment he was driving went into the water at the Tiger's Eye golf course late last week.

Independent investigator hired to look into Bladen County teen's death

An attorney representing the family of a Bladen County teenager says they have hired an independent investigator to look into his death after an autopsy report said he died because of hanging. Attorney Allen Rogers said Thursday the family is questioning the autopsy report and is considering an independent autopsy.

Man arrested for deadly hit and run

Wilmington Police have made an arrest in this weekend's fatal hit and run. Richard Pait, 24, of Bladenboro is booked in the New Hanover County jail on a $20,000 bond.

NC high school player dies after collapse

A high school football player in North Carolina has died after he collapsed before a game last weekend. Wake County Schools announced Monday that Isaiah Langston of Rolesville High School died after collapsing on the field before Friday night's game with Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School.

NC man charged in teenager's hit-and-run death

Authorities say a Clayton man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old boy waiting for a school bus at his home. Multiple media outlets report 28-year-old Efren Vences was in court on Wednesday, and he apologized for the death of Keith Jones. Vences is charged with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.

Cary man pleads guilty in wife's death in 2008

A man awaiting a new trial in the death of his wife six years ago has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Multiple media outlets reported that 40-year-old Brad Cooper pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Monday in Raleigh.

Hickory teen dies in wreck, driver charged

A Hickory teen has died in a wreck and another teen has been charged with driving while impaired. Local media outlets reported that 17-year-old Jay Robertson died in the wreck Sunday evening. The 17-year-old who was driving the car also has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle.
