Broughton High School will play for a state soccer championship on Saturday after beating New Hanover on Tuesday in the "4-A East Finals" for boys high school soccer. WWAY made the trip to Raleigh. Laney and New Hanover both won state soccer playoff games on Wednesday night. The two Wilmington schools will now face each other on Saturday. This guarantees a Mideastern Conference team will earn a spot in the eastern finals next week. Full story...

Laney, New Hanover and Whiteville all won second round state playoff soccer games on Monday night. All three schools will hit the soccer pitch again on Wednesday for third round state playoff action. The first round of the soccer playoffs concluded on Wednesday night all around the state. The majority of our local squads won. Winners advance to the second round of the state playoffs later this week. Plus, we checked in with former UNCW Seahawk basketball standout Adam Smith on Wednesday. Pender High senior Briana Pittman moved into 6th place nationally for career blocks in high school volleyball. Pittman now has 622 career blocks. We were in Burgaw on Tuesday when Pender's state playoff game was halted in order to recognize Pittman's achievement. We also had sports coverage from New Hanover, Hoggard and Laney on Tuesday. We had quite an evening of high school football on WWAY's 5th Quarter. We showcased New Hanover's victory over Laney. We featured East Bladen senior Farrell Murchison. He broke the career rushing record for East Bladen Friday. Whiteville's Terrin Manning had 15 carries, 5 touchdowns and 330 yards on Friday. Plus more! Full story...

Former South Columbus Stallion football standout Ethan Farmer says the UNC Tar Heel defense is getting better. Farmer and the Tar Heels host Georgia Tech on Saturday. On Tuesday on WWAY we featured the latest AP high school football poll, volleyball from Cape Fear Community College along with Coastal Christian's soccer win over Cape Fear Academy. Week 8 of the high school football season is complete. As usual we had loads of coverage on the 5th Quarter with host John Rendleman and analyst Trot Nixon. Unfortunately one area game featured a brawl that resulted in seven player ejections. The list of playoff teams from our area just got reduced due to sanctions that will result from the multiple ejections. Full story...
