All the rain we've gotten lately has not helped in the fight with the Juniper Road Wildfire in Pender County. Firefighters say certain areas of the fire saw as little as two-tenths of an inch of rain this week.

Pender is not the only county dealing with wildfires. Today in Brunswick County there were five wildfires totaling about 100 acres. All have been contained.

On the eastern side of Pender County crews continue fighting the Juniper Road Fire in the Holly Shelter Game Land. Firefighters say they now have 25 percent containment on the 21,500-acre fire.

The North Carolina Forest Service will be hold a "town hall" general information meeting Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Holly Ridge Fire and Rescue Department located at 109 Holly St. That's at the intersection of Highways 50 and 17.

Today the Juniper Road Fire in Holly Shelter burned northeast toward Onslow County. The east flank of the fire continues to slowly burn eastward toward Highway 17 in the Sloop Point and Surf City area.

The American Red Cross has opened emergency shelters for residents of Pender and Onslow County who have been asked to evacuate their homes as a result of a wildfire in the Holly Shelter area.

A wildfire burning in Pender County since the weekend has now grown to about 10,000 acres and is about five miles wide, according to an e-mail from County Manager Rick Benton forwarded to WWAY. Benton also says the so-called Juniper Road Fire is moving toward NC 53 and NC 50 in the Maple Hill area, but no homes are in danger at this time.
