Man sentenced in special deputy US marshal’s death
Authorities say a Kinston man was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder in the death of a special deputy U.S. marshal. Lamont Byrd was sentenced Monday in the death of Warren Lewis III, who also was an investigator with the Nash County Sheriff's Office and was assigned to a federal regional fugitive force. A worker at the Lenoir County Boys and Girls Club is facing several sex-related charges involving a teenage boy. Police in Kinston say 39-year-old Telas Ray Staten is charged with felony counts of statutory sexual offense, indecent liberties with a child and crimes against nature.
