The Wilmington Fire Department says the brush fire at 17th street between Independence Blvd. and George Anderson Dr. is now contained. This does not mean that the fire is extinguished and crews are still concerned about possible hot spots and unburned fuel in the fire area.

The hot weather and lack of rain is beginning to take a toll across the Cape Fear region. Saturday lightning in Pender County caused a fire in the Holly Shelter Game Land. Today the North Carolina Forest Service Fire Team worked to contain the flames.
