The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Office of Undergraduate Admissions has offered admission to 7,571 outstanding first-year students. The admitted candidates were chosen from a record 29,486 applicants-an increase of 24 percent over last year and 47 percent over five years ago.

A North Carolina inmate has been charged with killing another prisoner. An autopsy report released Monday says 51-year-old Jimmy Griffin suffered trauma to his head during an assault, resulting in fatal bleeding and swelling in his brain.
