The North Topsail Beach Board of Aldermen decided to pass along some of the sandbag costs to homeowners at a meeting Wednesday night.
Officials in North Topsail Beach met Wednesday night to figure out how to pay for several super sized sandbags on the north end of the island.
With beach renourishment way overdue, residents at a Pleasure Island condo complex say the sandbags protecting their homes have been more exposed than they normally are.
Topsail Reef is at the mercy of Mother Nature. The eight buildings, housing 240 homes needed protection from some major erosion, caused by a combination of Hurricane Irene, winter storms and high tides. The condo complex elected to have sandbags installed as a temporary fix.
Sandbags are the last line of defense for many beach front homeowners, but the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission says they have to go. The removal of the sandbags in Kure Beach is a very sensitive subject.
