Virginia defeated UNCW on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Seahawk David Sizemore scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half to give UNCW the lead. Virginia scored an equalizer just before the break. Freshman midfielder Kalvin Kromer and junior midfielder Daniel Escobar each scored a goal in the second half to lead UNCW to a 2-0 victory over Bucknell University in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening. We knew it was just a matter of time. David Irving is back in the USL Pro Soccer League, On Wednesday he was named the head coach of the new Tulsa franchise. Irving had been the face of the Wilmington Hammerheads for more than a decade until he stepped down this summer. Full story...

UNCW has earned its first at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and will host Patriot League champion Bucknell in a first-round game at 7 p.m. Thursday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. We attended a bracket viewing party on Monday when the pairings were released. Full story...

Broughton High School will play for a state soccer championship on Saturday after beating New Hanover on Tuesday in the "4-A East Finals" for boys high school soccer. WWAY made the trip to Raleigh. Laney and New Hanover both won state soccer playoff games on Wednesday night. The two Wilmington schools will now face each other on Saturday. This guarantees a Mideastern Conference team will earn a spot in the eastern finals next week. Full story...

Only two weeks remain in the 2014 high school football regular season. On Friday's 5th Quarter we showcased several games from around the region. Hoggard, Pender, South Columbus and Wilmington Christian all won state playoff volleyball games on Thursday night. Odds are we'll have at least one state champion from the area this year. On Thursday New Hanover won the boys soccer crown for the Mideastern Conference. We were there for that too. Plus, the Landfall Tradition tees off on Friday. Prior to the event we caught up with UNCW Seahawk golfer Kayla Thompson. The UNCW freshman is a graduate of West Bladen High. Full story...

On Wednesday New Hanover shutout Hoggard in boys soccer. We were there to see some of the action. The Wildcats will earn a league title if they can win on Thursday against Ashley. Four area volleyball teams will continue their state playoff journey on Thursday. In fact the Wilmington Christian squad has a shot at securing a state volleyball title this weekend in Greensboro.
