In 1994 fastpitch softball became the standard thanks to a Wilmington couple who made it their mission to make a difference by eliminating the slow lofty pitch. In fact Judy and Buck O'Shields were both recently inducted into the NC Softball Hall of Fame.
The Burgaw Belles traveled all the way to Louisiana in order to compete against a slew of state champion softball teams. In the finals the girls from Burgaw had to face Louisiana. As it turns out Burgaw won 12-7 on Thursday afternoon to capture the Dixie Belles World Series title.

In order to extend their season into the baseball state playoffs the Laney Buccaneers had to win the Mideastern Conference. As it turns out the Buccaneers lost in the opening round; thus, the season is now over for Laney baseball. Plus more!

Phil Rose may be 83, but his spirit is younger than ever. He founded the Wilmington Senior Softball Association back in 1995. With 200 players now, it's hard to believe back then there were fewer than a dozen.
