Wilmington's Lenny Simpson is more than just a hall of fame tennis player. He's a teacher, a coach and a pioneer. In fact a few youngsters on Simpson's tennis team competed like pros at the state junior tennis tournament over the weekend.
Ashleigh Antal and the Vanderbilt Commodores won the national title for women's tennis on Tuesday by defeating UCLA in Waco, Texas. Antal is a graduate of Laney High School.
Cape Fear Academy appeared to be the cream of the crop in Wilmington as far as boys tennis this season. After all, they already have victories over Hoggard and New Hanover, but revenge is sweet. Hoggard gets a chance to face Cape Fear on Tuesday. New Hanover had their rematch with Cape Fear Academy on Monday.
James Blake will headline the 2015 Legends of Tennis at the Country Club of Landfall on September 18th and 19th. Blake will be joined by tennis pros Rennae Stubbs, Mikael Pernfors, Jimmy Arias and Charlie Owens.

Pender High senior Briana Pittman moved into 6th place nationally for career blocks in high school volleyball. Pittman now has 622 career blocks. We were in Burgaw on Tuesday when Pender's state playoff game was halted in order to recognize Pittman's achievement. We also had sports coverage from New Hanover, Hoggard and Laney on Tuesday.

Lindsay Davenport will headline this weekend’s Legends of Tennis charity exhibition event hosted at the Country Club of Landfall’s Drysdale Sports Center complex this weekend. Proceeds from Legends of Tennis will go directly to the Landfall Foundation’s grants programs to assist in awarding grants to local non-profits from the greater Wilmington area.

The 12 & under intermediate tennis team from Wilmington's Cape Fear Country Club won the Southern Regional 12 & Under title over the weekend. They opened the weekend with a victory against a team from Alabama. Wilmington proceeded to beat Mississippi, South Carolina and Louisiana. In the championship match the Cape Fear Country Club squad defeated a team from Georgia to claim the title.
