The streak is over. West Bladen had a 17 game winning streak over East Bladen in boys basketball until Tuesday night. East Bladen's Hastin McGill hit the game winner to give East Bladen a 46-44 win. It was the first victory for East Bladen over West Bladen since 2005. Pender defeated Trask in boys hoops. Wake Forest edged NC State. The Carolina Hurricanes lost their home opener. Full story...

Rasheed Brown of Trask was the frontrunner for WWAY's play of the night with a sensational slam dunk in the second quarter for Trask. It didn't end up being the play of the night though. Ashley's T.J. Williams ended up with that honor after he slammed home a dunk at the buzzer to give Ashley a one point win over New Hanover. On Friday we featured action from seven different venues with eleven games in all on WWAY's Full Court Press. Full story...

Adell Harris picked up her first win at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday night. The UNCW women's basketball team defeated NC Central in the home opener for the Seahawks. The ACC Big Ten Challenge ends in a 6-6 tie after the ACC teams came up big on Wednesday. We've got high school hoops from Leland. Plus more! Full story...

On Tuesday night on WWAY we checked out high school basketball action from Shallotte, Rocky Point and Hampstead. This includes the first game of the season for the 4-A defending state champion New Hanover Wildcats.... On Tuesday the UNC Tar Heels were cold on the court in Hawaii, especially in the first half. The Tar Heels are no longer undefeated... Plus more, including a 138 point performance from one player on the basketball court ! Full story...

Friday night’s sports segment featured high school baseball action from all over the region. We checked out Hoggard versus Greenville Rose, as well as New Hanover against Laney. We even had a grand slam in softball action from Rocky Point, where Trask squared off against Union. Full story...

Even though it's late June most high school athletes are not spending all of the waking hours at the beach surfing or swimming. If they want playing time on the basketball court this winter they're more than likely playing hoops even though it's the start of the high school basketball season is still five months away.
