UNCW head basketball coach Kevin Keatts said last year's UNCW team would have found a way to lose Wednesday's home game against the Liberty Flames. As it turns out, UNCW won a sloppy, physical game in overtime to improve to 4-3 on the season. The game was highlighted by a handful of dunks. The North Brunswick boys did not put up much resistance to Hoggard on Tuesday night. Dunks from Xavier Johnson energized the crowd and the Vikings rolled to an easy win. We had our sports cameras in Shallotte too. West Brunswick remains undefeated. Laney lost in overtime against Scotland County. We were there for that one as well. Most basketball fans expected 4th ranked Louisville to pounce on UNCW. Louisville did win on Sunday night, but the game proved to be much closer than expected. In fact UNCW pulled within two points of the Cardinals late in the second half, yet Rick Pitino's club pulled away at the end to win by double digits. The Louisville Cardinals and the UNCW Seahawks have a connection in men's basketball. First of all, UNCW head coach Kevin Keatts used to be an assistant coach at Louisville. Secondly, the Seahawks will face Louisville later this week. Full story...

Former New Hanover Wildcat basketball standout Freddie Jackson has been waiting to have a career night. He didn't wait long. Jackson scored a career high 33 points on Wednesday night in the 2014-15 home opener for the UNCW Seahawks. Jackson blistered the nets, but he wasn't alone against St. Andrews. Full story...

Tuesday is typically a full night for high school hoops. We had game action from Rocky Point. It was the first meeting ever in basketball between Trask and Hoggard. In Buctown the Pender boys edged Laney with a come from behind win. We checked out an overtime affair between Cape Fear Academy and Coastal Christian. We had UNCW women's basketball action too. The referees had to stop Wednesday's basketball game at Cape Fear Community College due to a fight that broke out right before halftime between the Louisburg men's basketball team and CFCC. There weren't any scuffles at UNCW. The Seahawk women's basketball team did beat Campbell though. UNCW is now 2-0 on the season. Full story...
