UNCW holds off ECU Pirates in men's basketball; Atkins scores 40 for Seahawk women

UNCW handcuffed rival East Carolina on 28 percent shooting and set a season high with 11 blocks to shackle the Pirates 66-54 in a holiday men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum. The UNCW women basketball team also won on Saturday. It's hard to lose when Kelva Atkins tallies 40 points. The Seahawks won their second straight game to improve to 5-3 on the season and won for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings against their rivals at Trask Coliseum. The Pirates dipped under .500 with the loss and stand 5-6 on the campaign.

UNCW holds off Liberty in OT

videoUNCW head basketball coach Kevin Keatts said last year's UNCW team would have found a way to lose Wednesday's home game against the Liberty Flames. As it turns out, UNCW won a sloppy, physical game in overtime to improve to 4-3 on the season. The game was highlighted by a handful of dunks. We hope you get a chance to check out the rim rockers on our video. On Wednesday we also showcased BCC men's hoops, UNCW women's basketball and Laney wrestling.

Hoggard dunks over North Brunswick, West Brunswick stays undefeated & Laney falls in OT

videoThe North Brunswick boys did not put up much resistance to Hoggard on Tuesday night. Dunks from Xavier Johnson energized the crowd and the Vikings rolled to an easy win. We had our sports cameras in Shallotte too. West Brunswick remains undefeated. Laney lost in overtime against Scotland County. We were there for that one as well. We did showcase a victory from the Laney girls though.

UNCW more than holds their own with Louisville

videoMost basketball fans expected 4th ranked Louisville to pounce on UNCW. Louisville did win on Sunday night, but the game proved to be much closer than expected. In fact UNCW pulled within two points of the Cardinals late in the second half, yet Rick Pitino's club pulled away at the end to win by double digits. UNCW head coach Kevin Keatts is a former assistant coach at Louisville. Check out our game highlights tonight at 11pm on WWAY.

videoThe Louisville Cardinals and the UNCW Seahawks have a connection in men's basketball. First of all, UNCW head coach Kevin Keatts used to be an assistant coach at Louisville. Secondly, the Seahawks will face Louisville later this week.

Seahawks soar to record breaking victory in home opener

videoFormer New Hanover Wildcat basketball standout Freddie Jackson has been waiting to have a career night. He didn't wait long. Jackson scored a career high 33 points on Wednesday night in the 2014-15 home opener for the UNCW Seahawks. Jackson blistered the nets, but he wasn't alone against St. Andrews.

After a four-game road swing to launch the new season, the UNCW men’s basketball team is anxious to suit up tonight at Trask Coliseum for the 2014-15 home opener against St. Andrews. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

High school hoops: Hoggard boys beat Trask, Pender boys nip Laney, CFA girls win in ot

videoTuesday is typically a full night for high school hoops. We had game action from Rocky Point. It was the first meeting ever in basketball between Trask and Hoggard. In Buctown the Pender boys edged Laney with a come from behind win. We checked out an overtime affair between Cape Fear Academy and Coastal Christian. We had UNCW women's basketball action too.

110 points more than enough for another UNCW win

The UNCW men's basketball team scored 64 points in the second half against VMI on Saturday night. The shots were clearly falling for UNCW as the Seahawks improve to 2-1 on the season under new head coach Kevin Keatts. UNCW beat VMI 110-93. Fight mars CFCC basketball game; Seahawk women improve to 2-0 with win over Campbell

videoThe referees had to stop Wednesday's basketball game at Cape Fear Community College due to a fight that broke out right before halftime between the Louisburg men's basketball team and CFCC. There weren't any scuffles at UNCW. The Seahawk women's basketball team did beat Campbell though. UNCW is now 2-0 on the season.
