videoWe had quite an evening of high school football on WWAY's 5th Quarter. We showcased New Hanover's victory over Laney. We featured East Bladen senior Farrell Murchison. He broke the career rushing record for East Bladen Friday. Whiteville's Terrin Manning had 15 carries, 5 touchdowns and 330 yards on Friday. Plus more!

Wilmington's Tamera Young ends WNBA season as league runner-up; huge win for UNCW soccer

The WNBA season ended on Friday. Wilmington's Tamera Young will have to settle this season as the league runner-up. It's a wonderful title to have for the Laney High graduate. Elsewhere, Friday was more than a special night for the UNCW men's soccer team. The Seahawks knocked off nationally ranked South Carolina. Plus more!

Thursday night high school football

videoSeveral local high school football teams decided to play on Thursday in order to avoid the chance of playing in wet conditions on Friday. The weather forecast on Friday is scattered storms around the region. Regardless, we had our cameras out and about on Thursday.

Rust holding back NFL's Jonathan Cooper?

videoFormer Hoggard Viking offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper missed his entire rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals after breaking his leg in a preseason game last August. Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians earlier this week said Cooper needs to shake off the rust. Cooper even admitted his level of play is not where it needs to be. West Columbus basketball coach Michael Powell reassigned; Chris Haney leaves East Columbus

videoMichael Powell is the dean of high school basketball coaches in our region. He's been the head boys basketball coach for 27 years at West Columbus High School. Powell has been reassigned to rival East Columbus, but Powell may not accept the assignment. Powell may opt to retire instead. Chris Haney has resigned as the head football coach at East Columbus High School in order to go back to Ashley High.

Signing day at Coastal Christian; Sharks now 0-3

videoCoastal Christian High School held a signing ceremony on Thursday for four student athletes. We have a full report on that. In baseball the season is still young, but the Wilmington Sharks are winless after three games in the Coastal Plain League.

UNCW baseball wins CAA tourney opener; Whiteville advances in soccer playoffs

videoIn a dramatic finish the UNCW baseball team won on Wednesday on the first day of the CAA Baseball Championship at Brooks Field. The Whiteville girls soccer team didn't have a dramatic outcome, but the Wolfpack players still managed to win. Plus more!

Weekend sports update: Hammerheads win, state track title for North Brunswick + more

North Brunswick's boys track & field team won the 2-A state title over the weekend. The Wilmington Hammerheads won their second game of the season. Former New Hanover football standout Jermaine Jones is headed to New York for a tryout with the Jets + news and results involving UNCW sports.
