We reported last night the county was moving forward to certify the vote after the state formally notified former County Commission candidate Justin LaNasa by mail that his appeal of the vote had been denied. We have now learned that the way LaNasa was served by mail may not be adequate under the law.

The New Hanover County Board of Elections has cancelled its July 9 meeting to certify the May 4 vote to raise the sales tax a quarter of a cent.

The three candidates for US Senate will hold their first debate tomorrow here in Wilmington. Sen. Richard Burr and Elaine Marshall will also meet voters at other events in the area.

Brian Berger has defeated incumbent Bill Caster for the final spot in this fall's race for New Hanover County Commission. Berger claims the second Republican nomination along with Rick Catlin. They will face off with Democrats Deborah Butler and Sid Causey for two seats left open after Caster's defeat and Bobby Greer's retirement.
